Hi. I transferred 2 of my computers over to the BOINC agent, and now both computers are showing continuous internet traffic (through ZoneAlarm). This is happening even when the agent is paused. Why is this happening, and is there any way to reduce the amount of internet traffic from the agent, as this affects the computer usage for other things (I have DSL)? Thanks.

Hi,
----------------------------------------its strictly localhost (in the computer) traffic. To proof just pull the internet or router connection to see it continues. The newer ZA has an option to not report these localhost/loopback RPC Signals and purely flicker only when there is traffic going out of your PC. See FAQ for some discussion. ttyl

Thanks for your reply. By the agent sending data in this "Loopback" process at a rate of every second, it seems to me a waste of computer memory and resources, especially when it is not supposed to be running. Can't this be slowed down or stopped when the agent is not active? Thanks again, Howard |

... not without redesigning BOINC as a whole. It was configured to work with MULTIPLE projects. It seems redundant with only WCG. Once in awhile I fire up some of the others.

Howard,
----------------------------------------Actually that traffic is wholly insignificant. It's the heartbeat check using the RPC protocol and it only shows if you have the BOINCmgr GUI running. If BOINC is installed as a service and BOINCmgr has been exited, the traffic does not exist unless you fire up a BOINCmgr Remote Control connection. The visual queue lasts millions of nano seconds longer than the actual poll. I believe this heartbeat thing is going to change in version 6 also because heartbeat interruption has been a source of process crashes (when e.g. firewalls impeed).

Actually.... I'm going to get a little technical, and contradict you just a little, Sekerob.
The heartbeat is the regular communication between BOINC and the science application. What shows up on the activity monitor is the GUI RPC communication between BOINC and BOINC Manager. I suppose it is "a" heartbeat, but it isn't "the BOINC heartbeat". The GUI RPC communication mainly consists of progress bar updates. Everything you see changing in BOINC Manager was communicated in this way. It's much more efficient than using file system IO, and by avoiding shared memory or named pipes, it allows add-on programs to also communicate with BOINC. |

The bad thing is, that if the GUI to BOINC core client comms gets interrupted the system got very sluggish.... it happens to be the same 1 second interval, also used by that crude throttle. Not seen this bad response for a long time though with the 5.10 version. The tray icon simply shows the red shield to tell that BM is not connected to any core client.

This is because BOINC isn't multithreaded. It's one of BOINC's weaker points.

See FAQ for some discussion. ttyl I have the latest paid version of Zone Alarm. Where exactly is this control? If you're talking about expert firewall rules, those are designed only to permit or deny access. As far as I've been able to determine, they have no effect on whether or not 127.0.0.1 activity is reported. ![]() ![]() |

There is no such control, except on a Vista version of Zone Alarm that I have never seen.
Apologies for the confusion. |
