It would seem Dataman engineered quite a jail break today. Nice day! It is a bit early to be certain but we may be seeing a bit of an uptick in the number of members returning a result each day. It would seem that Dave got waylaid at the VA for a few days for some IV antibiotics. That's how they treat things if the infection is bad enough. Still, as long as they work, he should be back home in a few days. Also, remember that we need folks to share why they crunch here. We all have different reasons and different stories. Let's get ours out on our website. Let me know (here or offline) if you want to share yours. Three good days in a row. ![]() ![]() I hope Dave is OK. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at Apr 13, 2008 3:34:57 AM] |

If today was any indication it might be soon but I am trying to hold out until Memorial Day. Sounds like you have the same problem as I do...no air conditioning. I'm usually good til late June before I have to turn off a few machines during the day. Night time isn't a problem...normally. Contrary to popular belief, there ARE some advantages to living north of the 49th. ![]() Hope your Gateway got sorted out. |

It's a heat pump and when it gets hot enough to need it, it is so inefficient that it is not worth the electrical cost. Because of our very low humidity, swamp coolers work great. Low tech but very efficient. The crapway is running better than it ever has. I'm going to take it up to 100% CPU and see what happens. ![]() ![]() |

That's not good for the CPU lifespan.. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 13, 2008 4:53:52 PM] |

...Because of our very low humidity, swamp coolers work great. Low tech but very efficient. The crapway is running better than it ever has. I'm going to take it up to 100% CPU and see what happens. ![]() It's air conditioning or nothing here on the 'wet coast'. Swamp coolers have virtually no effect in this area. As I know very little about EIST (other than it's a good thing for laptops), I found this exerpt. "Under Microsoft Windows XP, SpeedStep support is built into the power management console under the control panel. In Windows XP a user can regulate the processor's speed indirectly by changing power schemes. The "Home/Office Desk" disables SpeedStep, the "Portable/Laptop" power scheme enables SpeedStep, and the "Max Battery" uses SpeedStep to slow the processor to minimal power levels as the battery weakens" (Wikipedia) So, as far as I've understood on a desktop machine, you shouldn't have to disable it in the BIOS. Of course, I always stand by the addage..."whatever works". ![]() |

But I'm with Blizzie on this one. I get real scared if my pc's go over the 65 degree C mark for any extended period of time. If you remember, about 6 months ago, I was complaining that my alienware was putting out about 80 C on the CPU. I took five minutes cleaning my case with compressed air and voila, average CPU temp dropped to a cozy 60! |
