I dont know what you all are crying about-I have 2 Gateways 4c running 69-73 and all they do is crunch been doing it for four months another Gateway AMD 6000 dual core i had to change from vista to XP Pro running 71-74 for 6 months and they keep my bedroom cozy Good to hear you're back Gerald! But I'm with Blizzie on this one. I get real scared if my pc's go over the 65 degree C mark for any extended period of time. If you remember, about 6 months ago, I was complaining that my alienware was putting out about 80 C on the CPU. I took five minutes cleaning my case with compressed air and voila, average CPU temp dropped to a cozy 60! CPU temps vary by Intel or AMD and the stepping. For you Q6600 people. If you have a B1 stepping max temp is 60.1 C and if it's G0 it is 70.1. The rest of Intel's C2D are 60.1 C. AMD.. I'm not so sure. |

...Because of our very low humidity, swamp coolers work great. Low tech but very efficient. The crapway is running better than it ever has. I'm going to take it up to 100% CPU and see what happens. ![]() It's air conditioning or nothing here on the 'wet coast'. Swamp coolers have virtually no effect in this area. As I know very little about EIST (other than it's a good thing for laptops), I found this exerpt. "Under Microsoft Windows XP, SpeedStep support is built into the power management console under the control panel. In Windows XP a user can regulate the processor's speed indirectly by changing power schemes. The "Home/Office Desk" disables SpeedStep, the "Portable/Laptop" power scheme enables SpeedStep, and the "Max Battery" uses SpeedStep to slow the processor to minimal power levels as the battery weakens" (Wikipedia) So, as far as I've understood on a desktop machine, you shouldn't have to disable it in the BIOS. Of course, I always stand by the addage..."whatever works". ![]() EIST or Speedstep, "steps" down the multiplier on yuor CPU to conserve enrgy and to lower heat when it isn't needed. When you're just in desktop doing nothing the multiplier drops making a 2400 MHz to a 1600 MHz. When you're gaming, etc it doesn't take effect. To sum up, it helps control heat and power usage. It messes with overclocking, so I always disable it. |

Older than most of us. (We'll have to see what Keith has to say about that).
I see DM browbeat mlafferty into submission, according to the stats. ![]() |

Is the extract quoted previously from Wikipedia incorrect about WinXP disabling Speedstep in "Desktop" mode incorrect? Would CPU-Z show the lower multiplier if no other programs are running? IE: idling How is overclocking affected when EIST is enabled? |

Yes, CPU-Z does show the lowered mulitplier and it will change accordingly. People always ask why their processor frequency is lower than it's supposed to be; cause of Speedstep. Enable SpeedStep. Idle in desktop. Then open BOINC. The multi will change. 3. Overclocking and SpeedStep cannot live together in harmony. 3. |

Older than most of us. (We'll have to see what Keith has to say about that). I'm old but not ancient. Contrary to rumor, I did NOT server in the Roman Senate. ![]() |

3. Overclocking and SpeedStep cannot live together in harmony. How true - and another consequence having it speedstep activated for Boinc users is that you will usually end up with a lower benchmark as a consequence - as when it suspends the WU's to run the benchmark, the multiplier will drop because you are no longer running at full throttle and you will bench at a lower speed. |
