Re: Problem with Linux?

It has to be something to do with Ubuntu 64 bit 7.10, Server 2008 does not do it and neither does Ubuntu 7.04 nor dies Windows XP 32 bit. I do not think it is my rigs. I have added a 6th Quad a QX9650 and all of these have been Folding at Home with dual SMP clients 24/7 since I got disgusted with Boinc last time with no problems. I just thought I would try it again today and nothing has changed...

Re: Problem with Linux?

That doesn't show work being aborted.

edit: Also, it isn't a clean install.

Re: Problem with Linux?

Here's my best guess as to what is happening.

You are installing BOINC by copying an existing installation. For some reason, WCG isn't assigning a new Host ID. Therefore, when it contacts WCG, WCG resends the work that this host is supposed to be doing. But this work is completed by your other computer, so the next time you contact WCG, the work is aborted.

Is this a plausible scenario?

There is an outside chance that this might happen even if you did install a completely fresh BOINC setup, but by a series of coincidences, this computer is identical to one of your others.

So, the best way to fix this is a two-step process: first, make sure that the hostnames on all your computers are unique. Secondly, delete the entire BOINC installation completely, and reinstall cleanly.

Ok that would make sense I guess. I have several rigs all set up from the same ubuntu disc and the exact same way and all the exact same log in names etc. It would seem to me though WCG would identify the machines different through the mac address? Folding at home has no problems with all the machines. I downloaded a new copy yesterday due to an install problem, the cd has a scratch on it. I installed it on the two rigs I am having problems with and waiting on the time limit to pass so it will give me some more WUs as they have used the daily quota on the previous install. I will see what happens this time...

Re: Problem with Linux?

No Sir, mac addresses are not checked. If the BOINC install has all the WCG credentials already, the servers wont check. If the credentials are not there, it checks 5 items of hardware + member name to identify if it's a new machine or an existing registration in an attempt to avoid to create a new device record.

Suggest you detach from WCG on the problem machine, Exit BOINC, go into the BOINC program dir, Delete account_worldcommunitygrid.org.xml and client_state.xml/client_state_prevs.xml and fire up BOINC and reattach using the name/password after ticking 'existing member.

Hope your domain (device name for the computer) is not same, else make it unique as per Didactylos' note.

I done a new install with a new iso last night but used the same machine name as my other rigs, should I format again and give those two problem machines a different name. All of my rigs are name david but have different net bios names. I noticed on WCG all being identified as david-desktop. And not to help matters all have same MB, VC, CPU etc.

Re: Problem with Linux?

You dont have to reinstall, just in the OS register a different name for the device and it will proliferate to WCG.... call them David1, David2 or whatever unique name. That allows you to see the results at WCG's Result Status page from which comp they come.
