I see they had to take down the widget code. Could it be said they are "having a bit of a sticky widget"? (groan)

BTW: Last night's "intruders" were one or more deer munching on the last remaining leaves on the rose bushes. biggrin Still it is nice to see my "security system" is on duty and alert. wink

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 23 smilesmile

Yeah, its just a lowly pentium 4. But it is bothering me that it's being so soundly outperformed. Next machine MUST be a quad.

Jonathan, I hope you don't mind an outsider's theory on this.

There's a couple of reasons why the lower mhz machine does more work. Your AMD is probably producing higher Gflops, thus producing more work. I'm surmising the Intel is probably a D960 processor. The D series, although being a dual core processor, does not produce high Gflops. Certainly less than the latest C2D processors. If you are using BOINCView, you can check the rating of each machine in Gflops.

Do you use your desktop machine as your main machine? Any other programs you run take away from your crunching output, but I would bet it's mainly the difference between the AMD vs Intel output.

For example: I have a D925 3ghz dual core which only produces 1.6 Gflops. Compare that to my E6750 C2D (overclocked to 3Ghz) which produces 2.9 Gflops. That's a major difference.

Exactly. Which is why I asked for the full specifications. GHz power is important, but it also depends on the type of CPU. Pentium Duo Core, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Pentium 4, Celeron, etc. I'm not to familiar with AMD. I'm an Intel/NVidia person. smile

Core 2 Duos outperform Pentium 4s by a lot.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 23 smilesmile

So, I have a question for you Blizzie, here are my specs:

1 | ABIT AA8XE 925XE MB

1 | P4 3.6JGHZ 1MB 800FSB LGA775

2 | 3GB DDR2 PC4200

1 | 16X DVD-ROM REV.2

2 | WD 250GB SATA 7200 RPM 8MB HD

1 | CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY 2 ZS 7.1

1 | NVIDIA GEFORCE 8600 GTS 256MB PCIE

1 | MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PRO COA

1 | ENERMAX EG465P-VE 24P ATX 1.3 460WATT POWER SUPPLY

1 | GFX CK03-1225 DUAL SLOT CARD KEEPER

1 | ALIENICE INTAKE BLUE FAN

1 | DUAL COLD CATHODE BLUE LIGHT KIT

Does it make sense for me to radically upgrade this machine (ie. new processor, liquid cooling) or does it make more sense for me to just buy a new machine? I've built a pretty decked out quad on ibuypower.com for less than 2 grand with dual graphics cards, but I'm wondering if I might do better by just upgrading what I have now. Also, how much would it cost to have someone install a new motherboard (if you think I would need a new one), CPU, watercooling solution (they cost around $300 for one that will cool CPU and dual graphics) and SLI graphics?

I suspected as much. Do you recommend any particular vendors? I personally am fond of ibuypower since they're solid alienware knockoffs.
But if you know a better company, let me know. Also, I'm in no hurry whatsoever. My computer is fine right now - runs Bioshock and COD 4 on medium detail well and crunches pretty well too.

Build yourself a new machine. I will help you with specs and budget costs. The motherboard doesn't allow overclocking and it's a Pentium 4. Why do you want to watercool a Pentium 4? You can't upgrade CPUs since the motherboard do not support Socket 775 for the C2D and C2Q. Video cards.. depending on what kind you want will cost about $550. Get 2x 8800 GTs. But if I were you, I'd just get one for now. Watercooling, I'm not too familiar with making custom ones.. So I can't help you there. You cannot just install a new motherboard, when you replace the motherboard, the whole Windows OS needs to be reinstalled. So.. I'd get a new computer. You can get one with a powerful CPU for crunching and a 8800 GT for gaming. biggrin

Sorry if this makes no sense. I have to run to my Physics Seminar for homework.. Catch you later.

Are you building your own or buying from a manufacturer? I recommend making your own system. It allows more flexibility and you get to learn from it.
