Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

No, stefada, in my country we have no tradition of jumping through the flames of a bonfire
or walk on glowing charcoals or wearing gloves of redhot iron …
But sometimes I have moved my finger through a lit candle; the slower I move, the more I feel it.
Beautiful picture from Washington, D. C. smile
Do you have fireworks in France on July 14? Do you have a military parade and an airshow in Paris?

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

If you do not know, I share! In France, there are great festivals for Saint John, and bonfires. It is a celebration of the harvest that is coming.

And there is this tradition, especially children / adolescents, jumping to cross the fire. The proverb says that if we get there, the year will be good.

And for safety instructions, it's just prevention. You stumble in the fire, well done, all dressed in cotton, you roll and do not realize. If there is polyester, it is ambulance and direct hospital.

But what a nice trip ! blushing

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Like you in France, we celebrate St. John's Eve (June 23) and turn it into a Midsummer party.
We have bonfires and we burn witches in effigy - once they were real women like Jeanne d'Arc sad
We sing our Midsummer Song, but we don't step in the fire.
We have light nights - meaning it doesn't get really dark all night
- more of a twilight
for a couple of months around Midsummer.

So, stefada, on to Bastille Day.
In Paris it's a grand celebration, but how about in St. Affrique?
How do you celebrate there?

Good Morning Base Campers!
tanner2 went back to MOT after securing himself the owl badge tongue
To pick up the slack in Captain adriverhoef’s challenges, I appealed intensely and pittyfully
to my two main wordgame buddies BladeD – already a Base Camper
- so why is he not here already? Why must I beg? thinking
and pcwr from London with no team affiliation at all and who never Base Camped.

Furthermore, I waded through oceans – you cannot swim there – of rather male chauvinist smileys
- I have a special, very robust dry suit for that
and posted in the XtremeSystems’ forum.
So now I’m drumming fingers and flapping my tail. Impatiently. smug

Good Morning Base Campers!

We have two important days to celebrate:
July 4 - Independence Day in the USA
July 14 - Bastille Day in France.
(…)
Do you know other important dates in July, adriverhoef?
Well, suddenly there was a flash of inspiration idea:
wouldn't it be a great idea to celebrate the 'birthday' of "One Giant Leap For Mankind" aka walking on the moon, 21-07-1969(*)?

  • At 02:39 UTC on Monday July 21, 1969, Armstrong opened the hatch, and at 02:51 UTC began his descent to the lunar surface (…) and at 02:56:15 UTC he set his left foot on the surface. (…) After describing the surface dust (…), six and a half hours after landing, Armstrong stepped off Eagle's footpad and declared, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Excellent idea, Captain adriverhoef
We'll incorporate July 21 as a peak day since July 4 is over
    - hoping this lunar intermezzo will attract more Base Campers
Hey, even I found that event out of this world, if I may say so
    - the way you move on the moon biggrin
And the whole affair is commemorated* in Back to the 80's which I have played
a number of times - and still like
    * - a wildly inaccurate reference, of course
    - it just says "When we put satellites in space"
    - it was while Richard M. Nixon was president men were put on the moon to walk in a peculiar ways blushing

Sorry, history was never my peak competence - even as you put it right under my nose, Adri tongue

    For TPCBF:
This top40.nl is the place you could go virtual camping if you're not otherwise engaged
    - it will bring you to the Netherlands
    Curiosity bubble burst:
    Why a shack?
    Field work of some kind?

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

    Little Mermaid,

    ----------
Interesting how you celebrate Saint John. We do not burn a witch's effigy, at least I've never seen that. But in the kind, in the north of France, they burn Mr. Carnival at the end.

And I said, we do not walk in the fire, it would be much too dangerous! We jump over to cross it. (Under the supervision of firefighters, always be careful with fire)

    ----------
Concerning July 14th (French national day),

Everywhere in France, there will be fireworks. At least in all the cities that are the size of Saint Affrique, but also in smaller villages. In my opinion, the prettiest in the region is that of Roquefort, that all Combalou serves as launching area rockets. But that of Saint Affrique is very pretty too, that it is launched from the old bridge.

There will also be commemorations that will bring together veterans / military / gendarmes / firefighters (depending on what is in town). We are all dressed, the Flags in the wind. When I was a firefighter, we did not run a parade. Simply all in rank, the time one or more officials make a speech (mayor, prefect, etc., depending on the city).

Finally, it is usually also the occasion of festivities, but it really depends on the town halls (municipality ? confused ). There may be a ball, a concert, a show, nothing at all ... I have already seen children's entertainment in the afternoon, to explain where the national day comes from. It's really different depending where you go, but it's celebrated everywhere.

    ----------
An opportunity to explain the meaning of the French Flag?

It's very simple in fact: Blue and Red are the colors of the city of Paris. White is that of the King. Blue, White, Red, today it is often associated with "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". But the symbolic, originally, is that now the King is surrounded by the city of Paris. The people are present on the Flag, it is no longer only that of the King.

Thank you very much for telling about Bastille Day and how it is celebrated in different ways all over France.
And about your flag. Yes, I thought it symbolized "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité", but it doesn't.

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

    Little Mermaid,

    ----------
"Freedom, Equality, Fraternity" is what the Flag represents today, that it is still the motto of France. I think that if you ask the question in the street, at random, that's what almost all the French will answer you.

But I like to know the origins, to know where it comes from. The French Flag, at the base, is the city of Paris that surrounds the King. After, I'm not going to do a history class, but we must put in context. The fall of the Bastille is a symbol, but really a step, even if very important. There have been several attempts to make a Constitutional Monarchy, there has been what is called Terror, then Napoleon too ... Things have happened in France since that day, and we are to the Fifth Republic since De Gaulle.

Without report, but to have spoken about the commemorations of July 14, it reminded me of a wonderful memory. I do not have too many words to describe. So, I share like this ...
In 1998, I had the honor to put myself at your attention, right next to a veteran of the 14-18 war. He had just turned 100, so there was the prefect and 'the handsome man'. Even as young as I was, I had the impression that it was he who remained the simplest. In any case it was impressive, to be in uniform next door, and see everyone who comes to shake our hands.

For the fireworks on the 14th, do not count on me to take pictures. By cons, I intend to find videos of the one I consider one of the most beautiful in France, but must keep a little surprise.

    angel

    adriverhoef,

    ----------
Great idea for 21! And as a good idea leads to another (well, I hope):

Can we find satellite maps of France, showing the brightness of the cities, the night of the 14th? (Photos from the moon that would be classy, but it's not practical)

I had never thought of it before, but it must be impressive, to see a country 'flashing' everywhere, because it's partying.

Someone at the NASA number, we have beautiful pictures to see well?

    thinking

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Thank you for your informative post, stefada.
I cannot help but tell that the Danish flag
    - Dannebrog meaning the Cloth of the Danes
descended from heaven on June 15, 1219, during a battle in Estonia.
It is probably the oldest flag in the world.

We use it all the time on official occasions such as the Queen's birthday
as well as on everybody's birthday on the flagpole in our gardens
    - whenever a family has something to celebrate they raise the flag
and when someone is buried, the church raises the flag at half pole before the ceremony
and raises it to the top when it is over.
We put flags at the driveway when we have a party and flags in birthday cakes
and a real Danish Christmas tree needs to have flags on it tongue

    - and most people dress in red and white at national football games smile
