Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Little Mermaid,

That's exactly it: "Breton one day, Breton always".

And yes, Brittany is a very special 'country'. I think the most important factor is that it is a peninsula, and that until the beginning of the 20th century it was very traditional. (I'll come back to it later). But without going back to the Celts, I think History is important too.

Already, Brittany was only late attached to France. We agree that it was in 1532, but as always in history, it is a symbolic date, it was not done in a day. Especially since the Bretons Dukes, have long opposed, having for allies England, Spain and Austria. This has spawned several wars against France.
But, the attachment of Brittany is not a military defeat, but something negotiated diplomatically. (Brittany would have ended up losing, but its nobles were smart)

According to the legend (history is a little less pretty), Brittany joined France at the wedding of Queen Anne to the King. With the condition that the traditions and laws of Brittany should be respected. One of the rest being that there can be no bridge or paid road. That's why there is no higthway in Brittany, but "express lanes". It's the same, except that the speed is limited to 110Km/h instead of 130, and it's free. cool

I come back to the beginning of the century, and to the 14-18 war. There is a new word that has appeared in the French language: "baragouiner", which means "speak French with difficulty", today. In the trenches, most Breton did not speak French well, but Breton, especially between them. And there are two words we hear all the time: Bara and Gwin (bread and wine). What gave in French: He "baragouine" (He stumbles ?).
Even if it's an anecdote, we can see the shift, barely 100 years ago. And that, I think it's mostly related to the fact that it's a peninsula. At the time, someone who lived in Brest, was more likely to meet an Englishman or someone returning from the West Indies, than someone from Paris.

You seem very curious about my answers, so I share with pleasure. But do not hesitate to tell me if it's too much.

Yes, I like it. I might me able to read it on Wikipedia, but when you tell it, you give it a personal touch, stefada.
The thing about the expressways for instance. And the language.

Say, do you think the Vikings landed in Bretagne ever?

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Little Mermaid,

--------
I do not know much about the Vikings in Brittany, even if with their presence in Normandy, there must have been exchanges.
From what I understood, the nobles of Brittany have once again preferred to negotiate, than to make a war they would have lost. Which gave an alliance, again one. We are around 850, and here is what I found on wikipedia :

--------
The Kingdom of Brittany knows its maximum extension under the reign of King Solomon. Having come to power in 857 by assassinating his predecessor and cousin Erispoë, he inherited a kingdom in which the Vikings settled. Passing an alliance with some of these, as well as with Louis, the son of Charles the Bald, he maintains a climate of civil war in western West Francia

Welcome to Base Camp NixChix wink

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

I put in over 100 years for the last team I was in. Also I am somewhat partial to mermaids as my daughter was employed as an impersonator of the famous cartoon version for several years at a magical place like in this link and this link. BTW, they are not my daughter, although the first photo is a close match.

Cheers coffee

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Lots of good reasons to become a Base Camper, Nix Chix biggrin
What a lovely daughter you have since she looks like the mermaids you showed here. Is she a college/university student?
Do these parades take place in Disneyland?

It is unusual for Base Camp to have such a tight schedule. Normally we do treks of a duration of 5-10 days once a month or so
with breaks where the Base Campers return to their home teams.

Are you currently without a team to call your home team, Nix Chix?
