Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Yesterday I tried to install "Image Composer" which is an accessory to Microsoft FrontPage 98
- Please keep it secret from Mr Bill Gates
I worked some with that one years and years ago. To my surprise Windows 10 accepted the old guy, made some registry adjustments and such
- isn't that a little miracle?
and now I have fun doing some brush-up learning the handles and buttons again.

For a test, I combined Base Camp's very first four badges which Ted e-mailed me from Base Camp's birth at UD:

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Yes !
We've all been to Chile for my little brother's wedding. That's what he sees every morning, before going to work.
The mount Osorno is about the size of Mont Blanc, and the lake more than 800 Km^2 ...
Encore un petit paradis sur Terre.
wink
Vraiment, stefada. It's the very pinnacle of Chile's tourism attractions, I think. What a view to get up to each morning!
I want to go there, too crying

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

little mermaid

It is clearly very beautiful, and Puerto Varas is quite unique in its kind (it is a former German colony, hence an original architechture for Chile). But the whole country is beautiful! Since my little brother married a Chilean, she was the guide. In three weeks we stayed there, we did a little more than 5'000Km, and if I do not say nonsense, between two and three thousand photos per day. But what I remember the most is the good mood. Wherever we went (and not just tourist stuff, given our guide), everyone was smiling. The poor people (there are some who are really very poor in Chile), they smile, they are polite, and they offer you services in exchange for a coin. And if you do not want they do not insist, and will ask someone else if it interests him.

One thing I found very cool is that there is no parking meter. On the other hand, in every street, there is someone who watches the cars so that there is no theft or degradation. And when we leave, we give him a coin, and he blocks the street so we can leave the parking lot quietly. There are a lot of odd jobs like that, which can not be rich, but help those who need it the most. It's like in supermarkets, there are very often young people who help to put shopping in bags. With the money they earn by doing that, they can pay for their education. And all these 'little things', it allows those for whom it is difficult to keep their dignity, while giving a comfort of life to everyone. Finally, that's how I felt it, and it was very nice.

biggrin

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

What you write here is quite touching and also raises some social indignation with me.
In times where greed grows to new heights with people already so wealthy that you think it's a lie, you get mesmerized by how 'the other half'* lives - only that it's some 98% or more if you take a look at The Paradise Papers.

By the way I also saw people having it as their business to open the door to the fast food joint I frequented in New York City. And then there was the man holding a sign saying: ”Why fake it? I need money for dope.”

In February I visited Cuba on a group trip, and I had a similar impression. The cyclo drivers called: "Lady, lady, taxi," and there was just a kind smile when I replied "No, thank you." I often think of these people for the most part cut off from the rest of the world, the internet is not common for instance, suppressed by a - again - greedy administration. How can they keep it up and still be so kind, friendly and seemingly happy? I walked the streets at night alone and never felt insecure.

And now Hurricane Irma has spoiled a lot of the little they had, and they cannot afford to rebuild.

We stayed in several 'casas particulares' a little uptown of the Malacon - the Promenade - along the Strait of Florida. These Bed&Breakfasts are one of the few things that has been liberalized so that people are allowed to have them as a private business. Each morning we met at a square opposite the tall blue building you see to the right in the picture. We couldn’t have done that when Irma hit. The waves were up to 11 m high.

Guantanamera - The Girl from Guantanamo - a poem written by José Martí back in 1929.

I may be wrong, but I think I hear
the quiet swooshing sound of a slide rule
and the little click-clacks of an abacus ....

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Did you know that the SeriousCrunchers&Base Camp combination made far more points in one day than I have done during my entire WCG life? confused

I always liked John Philip Sousa’s perky marches.
The cadence feels just this little tiny bit faster than most marches from other countries.
It makes you hurry up. Was that his intention?

I saw in the team USMC post that USMC celebrates its 242nd birthday today flag
John Philip Sousa wrote:
Semper Fidelis and The Marines Hymn
which both would have been good choices today, however I settled for
Stars and Stripes
with the Boston Pops Orchestra conducted by John Williams to set the pace for these challenging times smile

biggrin Yesterday, I sniffed around the team in front of us, DataValidation.com
They noticed me …
I have their ads placed by Google everywhere I go hypnotized

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

A piece of petit news:
bill1024, a welcome new addition to the Base Camp base crew, and I smalltalked in the EVGA Forum, and then he said:
"It's a small world isn't it?"
Smalltalking is often about geography, and it turned out that bill1024 goes regularly to the small town on the west bank of the Hudson River where I lived for a short while.
I haven't talked with OlddanIT yet.
Chances are he was my neighbor in Rhode Island ... thinking

Indeed, it's a small world biggrin
