Good to be back where the yellow cabs are yellow and not red.
The gridlock has spread to the sidewalks and limits your average speed to about one mph. Too many of us tourists altogether You're also slowed down by all these wonderful buildings with their individuality and sophisticated details. Above all the Chysler Building ![]() The area surrounding the UN Building was massively sealed off. General assembly taking place. The streets were filled with black, spit polished chauffeured Suburbans, Lincolns, and Mercedeses of the 500 class that should transport the delegates from Ghana, Cameroon etc. There were lots of large men in black suits with flex cords dangling from their ears. Nobody was let through. Not even the lady with the UN-blue sign on the brink of hysteria who had a meeting and was being chased from 42nd to 44th to 43rd and back to 42nd. You cannot help but reflect when you watch this scenery. What are we afraid of? What are THEY afraid of? A few days ago I went through the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial. He was quoted: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Something must have changed ![]() Finished the day in The Rubin Museum of Art" recommended to me by a friend. She is a buddhist. Her daugther worked as a model here in NYC once upon a time and was actually invited on a date with Mr Trumpf, but declined... ![]() I would have bought a bottle of wine, but it must be watered down wine they sell. 6%. Half of the going rate. Is that the law? No. Not me. ![]() Bought good old Carlsberg Beer instead. 5% Would have bought Fat Tire or a Samuel Adams variety, but it had to be cans, because this Base Camper is fooilsh enough to travel without as bottle opener ![]() |

For the third day running I had no luck finding some typical Jewish fare such as gehakte leber or gefilte fish. I did dare into Katz's Delicatessen Thursday night. The number of stations manned with cooks resulted in an instant flight reflex which I heeded.
----------------------------------------Yesterday I walked downtown again, spotted a couple of synagogues, lots of Chinese but no delis. Well, I met one, went in and asked for gehakte leber, and could I have it in a sandwich, perhaps, please? What do you want in that sandwich? Turkey? Ham? No, gehakte leber. Eh? Jiddisch, Jewish food. No Jewish here. Found a place where I got a pastrami, the closest I could come. Fear of food! Or rather of the food aquiring circumstances. Capt'n Joe, I would ask you to assist me, were I not to fly back to Denmark tomorrow. Your fearless dealing with the food court at the Union Stationin DC has made a deep impession. I don't give up easily. One I found on my navigator today was not open, the other one was turned into a pizza. I intend to find a recipe when I get home, buy some liver, and hack it. Oh, yes! I suddenly found myself in my old stomping ground, so Arby's it was with a quarter of milk. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 1, 2017 12:13:51 PM] |

Sorry, Arby's.
Dipped deep into my pockets and had brunch at "The View", the revolving restaurant at 47th floor of the Marriott Marquis. And what a view on this beautiful day. Two mimosas were included. Antonio gave me a third. Next the Staten Island ferry. Again what a view. Thirdly Whitney with one more view from the 8th floor plus the Warhols, Hoppers, and the Stella Brooklyn Bridge painting. What a finish! Now waiting for the A train to JFK and the Dreamliner to Copenhagen Thank you for tagging along, and I hope you'll choose Base Camp Travel next time. See you on Monday - or when the jet lag fog lift. |

Well, got to see JFK International Airport Terminal 1 really well.
----------------------------------------There were so heavy delays on the A train plus they went from express to local, and upon reaching Howard Beach, the Airtrain had turned into a bus. So, I missed my flight. A Danish couple had been 4 1/2 hours on a bus from Manhattan, so surface transport would not have been better. They had the last two seats on the via Stockholm, Sweden, that night, whereas I had to wait for 23 hours. Still awaiting my last leg to Copenhagen. Mr Moeller, you would be enthusiastic over the steel structures and the light effects from the large glass walls and ceilings. Too tired to feel foggy and jet lagged.... To smoothen my transistion from the audio background of NYC, a well orchestrated thunderstorm woke me up this morning/afternoon - I don't know what it is.
I feel like a doormouse. That fits right in with the peculiar fauna surrounding the team with which I'm currently Base Camping. Bats, bearcats, buffaloes, doormouse/doormice (what is the plural here) - I'm sure Minnesota Crunchers would welcome any new species with a crunching "device" for a peaceful coexistence, and I would certainly like your company ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() - even if you're just a human Don't know about Base Camping? Just ask any question right here at Base Camp's own Service Desk Now, back to sleep. |

Thank you, Capt. Joe
That dormouse is a charming little fellow, and yes, I learned quite a bit, too. Not least how to spell him. Dor - not door. Dor from French from Latin as in dormire. As in nobody sleeps So, how is the bat doing? |

I managed to drag myself to my German class which began today.
"Wenn jemand eine Reise tut so kann er was erzählen"* Matthias Cladius (1740-1815) Matthias Cladius's joy of travelling preceded the one installed in Denmark's own Hans Christian Andersen, who expressed his enthusiasm thusly: "At rejse er at leve"** Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) ![]() Becoming a Base Camper will let you share all kinds of new impressions, sounds, smells, sceneries, food, drink, and foreign flora and fauna, and you will learn something new all the time. Take this example: You may already know what this means, but I didn't. Noticed it on some of the police vehicles surrounding Trump Tower in New York City: K9 Operation I had no idea. A SWAT team? I looked it up, and it turned out to have to do with police dogs. Still it made no sense until I began saying the thing to myself (you can do so aloud in New York, nobody will think you're weird) : K9, kaynine, canine, AHA! So, come travel with Base Camp. Our current destination is Minnesota where they have lots of funny animals. I'm sure they have K9s among the bats, bearcats, and buffaloes, and that most of the mosquitoes are inactive. *When someone makes a journey he can tell something ** To travel is to live |

that most of the mosquitoes are inactive. No, they are very active and voracious yet. We have not yet had our first frost, much less a killing frost. Once that happens we will be mostly bug and insect free (some hide in warm spots and still come to bedevil us.)Cheers
