Thank you for visiting Base Camp, Sgt. Joe, currently my Captain Joe. Yes, I noticed all those eating places upon arrival, and on my scheduled visit there yesterday. Otherwise you can walk for miles without the chuck wagons you find three steps apart in NYC. Yesterday I had to ask a policewoman who could direct me into some back streets, and I collected all my courage and went into that "Potbelly". I don't know the system, cannot hear or understand what all the choices are for me to decide upon, almost fled the place, but I was hungry. Was lucky to get an absolutely puritan roastbeef sandwich born with provolone.
Today was The Mall walk, Mr Moeller. Lincoln, Jefferson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, WW II, Korea, and Vietnam, Holocaust, and the Department of Agriculture. You call it a huge building. Well, in my estimation it comes close to half the size of the State of Rhode Island. You have a minor problem with how the two theatres of war and the steles are composed at the WW II memorial. I see what you aim at, but it disappears when I think of say Operation Market Garden described so vividly in the movie "A Bridge too far". As for the Vietnam Wall you have nothing but praise. "One of the most beautiful and moving memorials anywhere.... Brilliant minimalism". I couldn't agree more. Tomorrow I'll visit your workplace, Mr Moeller. |

![]() It was you pulling the contols ![]() How generous of you to put Base Camping back on the map. And you did an elegant, sneak attack with what must have been pretty much your entire crunching corps. I laughed so much when I found out ![]() (and it dawned to me instantly - only had to go to My team to verify) what was behind Captain Joe's bewilderment. I have noticed you're high up there, almost stepping on Marist College's heels. When have you planned to pass? I wish I had a badge for you. Will a virtual hug do? ![]() Nah, make that one for each of your "devices" ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I don't want to realize it, but yesterday's 10 miles left some impression, so today should be gentle.
----------------------------------------By the way, I did meet the hotel manager. After half of my complaints, he broke down and offered me another room. It seems promising. Light and fan operate independently. Mr Moeller, I began the day with your Downtown East walk. So many pretty houses. Madison's home with a sign showing his and his wife's portraits by Gilbert Stuart lured me into the Portrait Gallery. I felt almost physical pain rushing past all those works of art in search of the four Stuarts they had there. Across from Ford's Theatre was Lincoln's Waffle House. Breakfast all day. Counter serving. Had what I so often dream of (and actually cook): fried eggs sunny side up, home fries, bacon, and wheat toast. It kept me going the entire day topped off with a quarter of milk Thought paninis and croissants were the only DC fare. On Constitution Avenue a parade of Central and South Americans took place. At first I only thought they were all Panamanians, but they all came. Lots of music, flags, costumes, and happy people. Lots of police and their vehicles, too. When I passed again later, the event was ebbing out. The sound was different and came from some 100 motorbikes. They must have sped them up to 10,000 rpm or more applying the brakes simultanously which made them into a very special orchestra. They also made burn-outs for smoke effects. The law enforcement had manned up dramatically and called in snow plows and heavy duty wreckers. Trump International Hotel was fenced off, and the officers stood shoulder to shoulder. So, Mr Moeller, finally I saw that wonderful building you manage, but poor logistics on my part. Dang! Saturday! I bought your book, and I shall return for a guided tour on Monday. deltavee, in the front yard of the Building Museum they sold Hill Country backyard barbeque. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat any more, but had a good tasting Shiner beer. They played music. I wish it had been your excellent Hexagame answer: X-mas on the Isthmus of Panama I cannot link on this "device" - yet - or I would have done it. [retrospectively fixed] Base Camp is up against the times. Facebooking instead of Foruming. Let's give it a while. USAF and sunfolk have been here. sujo1 has become a captain and is excused. And I have no strategy. Let's play it as it comes. I was immensely happy to see your sneaky pete, deltavee ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 1, 2017 12:04:08 PM] |

Far quieter room - even had hot water for the shower - adjusted to the six-hour time difference, so I was ready and rested.
Mr Moeller, for a start I went on the Foggy Bottom walk. Funny name in my ears. Many of the buildings I have passed on earlier walks, which only produces the joy of revisiting. Now all of a sudden the food stands lined the streets and lots of Kurds were present seeking support for a referendum to create a state of their own. The pickup truck pulling a flatbed with all kinds of cheery Trumpf slogans, flying Stars and Stripes, and "America the Beautiful" blasting from loudspeakers went by. He eluded me yesterday, but this time I got him. It wasn't in my plan to visit the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, but being informed of their roof terrace, I ended up enjoying the view, an espresso, and what they called a chocolate ganache. Then I did my best on the Georgetown walk, the C&C Canal tow path, the lovely houses, the University, and above all The Dumbarton Oaks Precolumbian Museum. I came for the addition that won Philip Johnson the Pritzker prize. And I had not the slightest problem with the modern building and the ancient artifacts. I enjoyed it all, even though it was too much of a fly by. Now, will I meet you tomorrow, Mr Moeller? |

Your making me sweat just reading your adventures. Wish I had half your energy. Sounds like your having a great time. Surprised you didn't see folks throwing eggs at the trump truck going by. Enjoy your visit.

No eggs that I saw, Bearcat.
I was held up by Secret Service officers clearing the way for a motorcade. Exciting for me to see. A little scary was the feeling that the presumable marksman at the base of the statue of William Tecumseh Sherman pointed directly at me with his weaponry. It's not energy, Bearcat, it's a drive, a desire. Nice man at L'Enfant Plaza asked me if I could manage the steps one flight down to the foodcourt. Nice police officer at the Senators' office building recommending me to take a cab to the National Archives. I guess I'm very lucky to have such good tail fins at my age. My WalkLogger recorded 10.99 miles today - hopefully enough active calories to elimitate that mmmm... nutty brownie |

A tourist's day in DC:
No, I didn't get to meet you Mr Moeller. The people at the information desk did their best, but your voice mail was on. For once I didn't hurry, but took my time admiring Montgomery C. Meigs' masterpiece. He was a man of many talents. I started out doing your DC South walk, Mr Moeller, and was so preoccupied that I arrived at the National Building Museum sweating and panting with my face red as a lobster just in time for the last guided tour of the day only to learn that they all were cancelled because no docent showed up. Luckily, they had a fine selfguided one. Next was the National Postal Museum. What a treat! My dad was a mailman working a rural route on a bicycle. He would have loved this place so much that they would have had to kick him out. Finally, I visited the National Archives with all the written foundation for this nation. I gave myself a broche: U in red, S in white, and A in blue to go with my armring from the 911 Museum. |

Was in DC awhile back to visit. Plenty to see. Very busy place. Marksman must have been scanning for possible targets. Trump is in NYC so not sure who was arriving important enough to get the shooters out there. Probably his lunch being delivered haha. Have fun.

Yes, Bearcat, here is much to see and do, and time is running out.
----------------------------------------The Secret Service answers politely. They tried to fool me by placing Mr Trumpf in New Jersey, and admitted to it being "another VIP". So, Mr Moeller, in order to speed up matters, I combined the Downtown West, Logan Circle, and Dupont Circle walks with the ambitious goal of completing them in one go. No such thing. But I also added on: Breakfast (my favorite dish) at Ben's Chili Bowl where Mr Obama has visited and a visit to Howard University. All day I looked forward to dinner at the Popeye's, I had spotted and plotted into my gps in the morning. Never mind the beef. I was after the pecan pie ![]() Maybe two ![]() ![]() Entering at the end of the day, I had bad vibrations. Mr Moeller, Popeye's no longer serve pecan pie! ![]() Now I should be able to do the remainder of today's assignment tomorrow. The good thing is: All my must-dos are done. Today I was on a guided tour of The Scottish Rite Temple of the Freemasons and visited the Phillips Collection. And fell asleep while mailing digital postcards to Denmark ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 20, 2017 5:16:39 AM] |

Mr Moeller, I was able to finish today's assignment early, and as a reward I spent two hours at the American Art Museum and one half dealing with a substantial chocolate cake in their courtyard.
You had nice words for the Mayflower Hotel, Mr Moeller. I have even more. For me it was a revisit from another century. The lady at the reception desk clapped her hands and exclaimed: "1984!" and collected a folder of all kinds of info, allowed me to take pictures all over the place, and informed security about this. You also had nice words for the Metro, and I liked the "coffered concrete barrel vault", too. And I inaugurated my Metro card which I painstakingly purchased upon arrival here in DC just in case from an inhuman machine with human help. I could have walked, but this was what I decided to learn today. I graduated with a D ![]() My carry-on is packed ready for returning to NYC tomorrow. Should any seasoned Base Camper smell the saw dust and feel like crunching for Minnesota Crunchers for a day or two with me like deltavee was kind enough to do, I should be pleased. Freshmen are welcome, too. |
