Well, I woke up at 1:50 AM (of course). Pomptly at 2:00 AM Cedrick woke up and started to work. At one point, I thought he had broken down as his motor stopped, but then restarted. He went through about 4 cycles of this and continued on. I think that he had gotten wedged under my laptop stand which has a sloping leg on it that he pushed himself under and the restarts were to get out from under it. All went well until 45 minutes into the job when it quit outright and beeped. The beep code was that the battery was drained. As it is a reconditioned unit, I think the first owner had not conditioned the battery properly on it's first charge (first charge is supposed to be a full 16 hours). A fully charged battery is supposed to last 120 minutes. I have ordered a new battery. As far as the cleaning goes, I think it does a pretty decent job. On an earlier run that I let it run for about a half hour, it had picked up quite a bit of hair, grit, and crumbs from a floor that really didn't look that dirty. I have a cleaning lady that comes once a month and my sons were vacuuming on weekends when they visited. I think I will be okay with Cedrick running a couple times a week and my cleaning lady once a month. It might even be possible to rely on Cedrick alone, but I still need my cleaning lady for other things I can't do and it is part of her normal service. All in all, I give it a thumbs up. Think I'll stick to the old fashioned sytem - my wife and a big stick. ![]() |

I'd bet "she" is the one holding the stick! Also, Kevin just posted this. Some information about the overcrowding in the PV jail. "There is a process that runs every six hours. This process takes care of some back-end accounting for workunits that have completed as well as runs the process which loads new work into BOINC grid. Part of this process stops the backend BOINC processes for between 10-30 minutes. Normally it is much closer to 10 minutes, but the researchers for the Dengue Fever project want to collect some detailed data about how long it takes to run 1 target through the grid. As a result, we are collecting much more data then normal. This is slowing down some of the backend processes. We will only be collecting that data for about one more week and then we will revert back to the normal amount of data. This is why if you go to your results page for BOINC you can see a lot more results then normal." ![]() ![]() |

Dave: That's great. I read they didn't work well on carpet. I think I'll look into one. Dataman-- The remanufactured one i bought was this one from Amazon.com. The one I got is the gray one at the lower right. It came with two "virtual walls" which throw an infrared beam across a doorway to keep the Roomba from going through a doorway as well as a Schedular/remote control which allows you to set up automatic cleaning schedules and also to control the movement of the Roomba manually for things like moving from room to room, etc. |

Dataman-- OK, I ordered one. I got a new one as the #1 complaint in the recent product reviews was the refurbished ones had a defective battery. We will have to swap Roomba stories. ![]() ![]() |

Lol at cleaning dorkz nubs! Just kidding. But what ever happened to... using A VACUUM CLEANER! I'll buy the roomba when it can cook me dinner too. Until then, I'm with Silver Surfer. Gotta love that rule of thumb.

Lol at cleaning dorkz nubs! Just kidding. But what ever happened to... using A VACUUM CLEANER! Jonathan -- I agree, but I can't really count on my balance when I am wearing my prosthetic. This will give me back a bit of the independence I lost when my leg was amputated as I will now be able to spend more time visiting with my sons when they come on weekends instead of watching them vacuum my apartment. Besides, Cedrick is the ideal companion for me -- totally non-judgemental and, I am sure he approves of my PC's crunching for the WCG. I believe he even wishes I could load Linux on him so he could participate. It probably gets a bit boring for him to have to sit around on the charger all the time with nothing to do |

While I have no kids, I can only reason that if I do, the best way for them to say, "I love you Dad" is by vacuuming my apartment. It would be interesting to flash your roomba and make it run BOINC! As far as poor Cedrick's entertainment is concerned, you could add a flash memory module and give him some mp3s to listen to while cleaning. Maybe some DragonForce!?!?

Judging by the fact that all my married friends mock my maturity level and my severe fear of committment, I don't see marriage in my future any time soon. I can hardly stand the committment of dating, let alone having to see the same person, day in and day out 16 hours a day!
