Hi acpartsman,
To make sure that your virtual memory will grow as needed, select Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Advanced - (Performance) Settings - Advanced - (Virtual Memory) Change then make sure that 'System managed size' is selected for virtual memory. This allows Windows to increase the virtual memory file if it is too small (I use 1.3 GB on my computer). If it is not checked, check it then press Set and all the necessary Apply buttons. If you are feeling adventurous, once you are satisfied with your VM setting, you can defragment your page file into one continuous block using PageDefrag : http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490#69230 Lawrence |

Manually set VM to a much larger size than the PC was setting it at. My only problem now is apparently no project will run on 128mb of memory. I guess I'll have to wait until i can find some memory for this one (it takes ram bus). I know, good luck finding that stuff, but the PC was free.

There's a similar quotation out there: There's no such thing as a free puppy. In the meantime, kick your virtual memory way up and try again. Some have made it work. We have a goodwill computerworks in town that often has old and crazy memory. Ask around.

One of my PC's that is/was running the Genome Comparison program has a 466MHz proccessor and 128 MB ram. What can I use it for now?? Having similar level machines running Linux, I wanted to run HPF2, but the server doesn't want to give those WUs to 128MB machines. So, I created a solution to get around that unnecessary limitation. I'm using boinc 5.8.15 modified to lie about RAM. If anyone wants to do likewise, here's the script to "fix" boinc 5.8.15. Create this file, call it boincfix, make it executable, run it: "boincfix < boinc > boinc.new" Then use "boinc.new" instead of boinc. (or rename it, or whatever) #!/bin/sh # boincfix - fix boinc limitations # only for boinc 5.8.15 i686-pc-linux-gnu, 1952316-byte file dd bs=1 count=249331 echo -ne "\xdc\xc8\x90\x90" dd bs=1 skip=4 count=0 cat |

Some with 168Mb machines have added a bunch of virtual memory to get workunits. What would that do in this case?

Some with 168Mb machines have added a bunch of virtual memory to get workunits. What would that do in this case? I've got one a P4 with 128MB of RAM and 1GB of Virtual Memory running BOINC. It gets FAAH units and crunches just fine. They take 13 hours but they're all valid so far ![]() |
