Re: What now?

Thanks for posting that Sgt.Joe. Started a thread with a table, asking folk to post their actual observe ram/vm uses per project, but none responded http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14608. If the personal profile is set to the suggested 500mb and the OS itself is configured to allow free growth (and shrink) of the VM i.e. let Windows/OS manage, FA@H should work fine, where on UD it would not. Those jobs will take longand folk need to read the Checkpoint Saving thread in the FAQ else stopping the job at the wrong time might loose hours of processing.

Re: What now?

One of my PC's that is/was running the Genome Comparison program has a 466MHz proccessor and 128 MB ram.
What can I use it for now??

Well..

If u could upgrade to 500 mhz and 256 mb ram you could join much more projects with your OLD computer!

It shouldn´t be so expensive if you buy already used parts!

You can propably find the parts CHEAP on internet!

I'm following that line of enquiry with some friends.

(I think I'd have to look in a museum for the parts though biggrin )

Thanks for the list though cool I've already started looking through them.

We have a Goodwill computer store here that sells pieces-parts for these kinds of computers here, and takes donations of same. That's where my slowest one came from. Go next door for their computer museum.

I followed another choice to make up a cruncher. A Dell 1.7GHz Pentium was having some problems. I took it to a local computer store, which swapped out the motherboard for an AMD64 2.0GHz and reused some of the same stock parts like memory and hard drive. This new CPU runs cooler overclocked to 2.4GHz than another older stock 2.4GHz AMD64. An AMD at 2.4GHz does the same work on WCG as a Pentium at 3.0-3.2GHz. Both of those AMD64s came from here

Another AMD64 came from Frys. Unfortunately, it's a Compaq. The Compaq version WindowsXP prevents e-mail server use, and webmail must be used. The ISP is the same one that sends e- mail smoothly on the other AMD64 with vanilla WinXP.

Re: What now?

GM

Did you use UD agent?
I've changed my old laptop (600MHz and 128MB) from UD to Boinc and it has started running the FigthAIDS@home project. It is better than nothing.

I'm using BOINC cool

Re: What now?

Good point, Sgt Joe.
I have noticed also that FAAH uses 130-140 meg of RAM, where HPF2 only uses 72-82 meg. Running HPF2 may be the saviour for some machines with minimal RAM.

Re: What now?

There is a post where asking to post actual observed ram/vm consumption for a matrix http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14608 .... The 250 in the System Requirement Page is a bit on the high side.... You can switch on a 'Peak column in the TaskManager to see the max for a job in RAM and VM has been. Those numbers interest me.

Notwithstanding, the servers check if requirements are met before work sending except BOINC is more lenient as long as enough swap file is available. If you succeed to get HPF2 and you allow it enough time to reach Checkpoint Save moments all should be fine.

Re: What now?

got a old laptop with 1 GB of RAM.. I could use that but it runs hot I would need to get a chill zone for it first

One option there is to force the CPU speed down. I have a 1.2GHz laptop that can run at 800MHz (Speedstep set to battery) at 100% CPU use without needing to run its fan. Personally, I prefer to run it that way and suffer the performance drop than having the fan running and the CPU still cooking.

I quite agree. HPF2 seems to use about 75MB RAM occasionally but sits around 60-65MB most of the time. Unfortunately, WCG won't give you HPF2 WUs if you have 128MB RAM installed. They need to remove this restriction.
