Re: What now?

You must have virtual memory enabled.

Re: What now?

Thanks Sekerob but you totally lost me.

"You need to delete the global_prefs_override.xml to return sanity to BOINC."

How do I delete this?
Also, id there another place I need to set usage to 100% other than in preferences on BOINC Manager?

sorry for confusing, but if you installed 5.10 in trial and used the local settings option in the advanced menu of the BOINC manager it will create this global_prefs_override.xml. You can check if it exists in the BOINC program directory. If it exists and you look in there you could have 2 lines there.

<ram_max_used_busy_pct>75.000000</ram_max_used_busy_pct>
<ram_max_used_idle_pct>90.000000</ram_max_used_idle_pct>

If these settings kick in, what the message suggest, you website configuration will be ignored for same parameters.

BOINC 5.8.16 does not create this file, unless its done manually, but in your case if existing as said, a remnant of a downgrade.

Re: What now?

I am running the 5.8.16 ver. of BOINC
My machine with the errors is a P4 1.7ghz 128mb ram and 13.8gb free space on the hd. Windows XP SP2. Not sure how to check the VM. I tried to copy the error message on the screen to post it here but couldn't figure out how to do that either.
Any suggestions?
I only receive credit if I run WCG on BOINC, right? Running another task will only give me credit on BOINC, right?

Re: What now?

acpartsman:

In order to manipulate virtual memory go to Control pane>system>advanced>settings>advanced. The third option down is virtual memory. Click on the change button. If you click on custom size, allocate at least 500mb for maximum size. A better option is click on the second option which is "system managed size." This will allow windows to dynamically manage how much space it will need. Click the set button if you want to set the custom size, or if you choose the "system manage size" click the OK buttons all the way out and you should be set.

Cheers

You're already set straight by Sgt.Joe on the VM settings. Copying log & error messages in BOINC is done as follows:

In BOINC Simple View, hit message button at bottom, select messages of interest and hit copy.

In BOINC Advanced , select message tab, highlight the messages of interest and hit copy button in left margin of view.

After paste in new post.

As for credit, on WCG are only for tasks processed for WCG. Tasks processed for outside projects go there. They merge in e.g. BOINCstats. Already gave you the link in my 4th of July post in this thread.

Re: What now?

The error message I couldn't copy isn't in BOINC it's a windows error. i pops up in the middle of the screen in it's own box but changing the VM settings seems to have solved that problem.
I'll look to see what message I'm getting now.

Re: What now?

okay good. Next time a separate box pops up, transcribe it or make a screenprint and use image-shack or photo bucket to store so you can post it: Here's how: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8344

I've had several times a pop-up from Windows, but it was always to tell, that VM was too tight and it asking for permission to expand it, which is a no-brainer of course. It's WXP-MM on C2D that did that.

Re: What now?

It appears that my latest problem is the Paging File is too small. Don't know what that is either.
Any advice?

Re: What now?

paging file, swapfile, virtual memory are all the same item. Tell us how much freespace you have on the disk where you can find pagefile.sys and howlarge the pagefile currently is. The tip Sgt.Joe gave requires to make a boot to take effect. Usually pagefiles assume a size of about 1.5 size the ram. Regardless, what you need is at least 500mb. As explained, mine grows automatically and sometimes i'm asked to allow it to grow even further.... always say yes.
