Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

Hey Lawrence,

per a few posts up, my auto update is no longer and given that the vector of penetration by anything evil is mostly the web browser, not worried since i do not use IE.

There have already been identified a few more zero-day holes, not fixed this round. Just insist on not opening any file attachement which is not zipped and set options to not permit any attachment to be launched....

oh and a Windows Media Player hole, most all versions, was just identified..... there is no workaround to stop asx? auto starting attachments :<(

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

It's Patch Tuesday again!

Microsoft Windows Update was short and simple this month. No reboot required (though of course I did). I just needed 2 files – the Malicious Software Removal Tool and a Security Update for IE7, totaling 1 megabyte. However, the website talked about 5.9 megabytes. Apparently the Office updates that they pulled at the last minute would have been another 5 megabytes.

I also updated Java this month ( http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp ) and downloaded a monster 94 megabyte file to replace OpenOffice 2.0 with OpenOffice 2.1 ( http://www.openoffice.org/ ). Also, I recently downloaded Adobe Reader 8 from http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

Adobe Acrobat Reader...

Now there's a subject for a rant - I haven't had one for a while tongue

A program simple in it's aim to render text and images in a standardised format a kind of portable document format pdf if you will wink

You would have thought by version 4 everything related to getting fonts and images onto virtual sheets of A4 would have been sorted and as far as I could see it worked

clicking on a pdf in version 4 gets the same result as clicking on a pdf in version 8

except... those nice folks at adobe must have thought those end users are having such a seamless experience with our fantastic acrobat reader they treat it like bread and butter and we great software engineers at adobe are getting very little credit for it so...

next time they want to read a pdf let's give them a multimegabyte download before they can read anything and refuse to work until they do then the next time they click on a pdf we'll create a great big splash screen that takes minutes to load up before they can read anything and then the next time they click on a pdf many more megabytes of patches (!) that way they'll appreciate all our hard work.

Dear Adobe can we have version 4 back when it made it a joy to open the ubiquitous pdf file instead of the nasty surprise we get today

Thankyou

Dave

Dear Adobe Please could we have version 4 back of Acrobat Reader because because because because...because of the wonderful things it does wink

biggrin
Glad to see you on your feet, David. Hope your cold is getting better.

Yes, I thought about a rant myself, which is why I almost did not mention Acrobat Reader. In a fit of irritation, I destroyed the installation on one of my computers last year.

We both of us are getting cranky in our old age.

Hal-Lucid, Rant? Must be the fever that comes with this day :O

There are a few websites that maintain links and a database where u can download old version..... if i find one in 3000 favorites i'll post it.

Actually, the latest incarnation is perfectly fine for me (8.0) and loads fast.

ciao

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

David, I tired of Acrobat Reader long ago. I switched to Foxit.

I had to sacrifice a couple of chickens and perform unspeakable magic on my computer to actually uninstall Acrobat Reader, but once I was rid of it, PDFs were a joy to use.

Yep I must be feeling better Lawrence the same old grumpy Dave Autumns is back. I don't get any the better for keeping. I've got the strangest of colds it's just in my chest and when they get the stethoscope out nothing completely clear. Then every now and again a reminder of just how good it is to have your lungs connected to the air outside. I was told the other other day to keep coughing as it might turn out to be a gold watch.

Well fed up with it

Sorry to burden the boards with my o2 grabbing difficulties blushing

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

Just checked I've only just been updated to 7.0.9 (LOL)

OK I'll go and upgrade and I'll be back to wax lyrical on the wonders version 8 brings to being able to see typefaces and images on paper. Caxton has a lot to answer for raised eyebrow

Re: It's International restart your Windows Cruncher day

It says

A new interface, new tools, and more options (translation - now you won't have a clue how to use it)

Maximize your screen real estate. (Whoohoo at last a solution to my minimising screen real estate problem wink ) Reader 8 has a completely redesigned interface, new tools, and a host of new options for viewing information more efficiently. (Pah)

How many megs?
