I'm sorry, but I just don't follow this logic. Why are you so keen to go to these other organisations? Have they already completed their updates to implement GDPR? If so, why not share their decisions with us so we can suggest better approaches to WCG? Or have they just buried their heads in the sand and ignored it? If it's the latter, why are you so keen to trust them with your personal data? I wouldn't! I am merely an observer to this discussion, as I don't even know what my own stats are, much less anyone else's, and couldn't care less. But it is interesting why WCG is taking such a hard line on how they export the data (though I am not clear what the line really is). But it is undoubtedly related to the fact that IBM is a large international corporation, with a lot of potential legal exposure. They have to be very cautious. I doubt that Rosetta, etc. are in that position, or at least they don't have all the talented lawyers to tell them that they are in it. Some of them may find out the hard way later that they had more exposure than they thought. A lot will depend on how the EU interprets the rules in the coming years. But the antitrust cases they bring us a different standard than is used in the U.S., for example, and since there is no equivalent to the GDPR in the U.S., who knows how it will be interpreted? IBM does not want to pick up a large liability for providing a free service, I am sure of that. If some people leave, that will be at the bottom of their corporate worry list. Do we have any updates on this agreement? It is almost a month since the WCG was gray-listed. I still crunch 50% WCG, but I would like to put that back to 100%.

Stanford university (F@H) Baker university (Rosetta@home) and Berkley (BOINC that hosts WCG)hosts, but all of these are very respected universities that host DC projects. But IBM can't do what they do ? Whats wrong with this picture. Einstein@Home was able to get this done in a matter of days as well...  Ralf  |

Do we have any updates on this agreement? It is almost a month since the WCG was gray-listed. I still crunch 50% WCG, but I would like to put that back to 100%. I don't think anything could be done, unless we (crunchers) go on a little "strike" & limit our computer power we give to WCG...when all of a grid goes down to 20-50% power compared to before 25th of May, they will start to think a little (maybe). I really think that sometimes people in IBM couldn't care less for WCG, especially the lawyers team. Don't get me wrong, people in WCG do care, just my opinion is that IBM doesn't care anymore. The possibility (however remote) that the results of crunching scientific data on a public website for public purposes could be considered private data is ridiculous. And it is not even the scientific data itself, but only the statistics of how much crunching was done. That its disclosure could be the cause of liability is beyond ridiculous. The EU should clarify that it is not covered by the GDPR at all. |

The EU should clarify that it is not covered by the GDPR at all. If only ... Yes, you're quite right. I could, and indeed would, argue that what we do here is NOT covered by the GDPR. BUT, it's only an argument and that's not clear enough for IBM's lawyers. So they're doing everything by the book (and, by their own admission, too slowly). All we can do it wait. Shouting, or withdrawing our machine time, is unlikely to cause enough grief to change anything. We're here to do the science. Let's just get on with it! |

Do we have any updates on this agreement? We are in daily contact with the legal team about this and continue to push hard to simplify the terms and process as much as possible. Trust me, wrapping this up continues to be a priority for us. OK, I am on a team. We crunch against other teams in races. We need stats on all the members in the teams, and the teams, and they need to be able to be viewed on places like stats.free-dc.org. If this is not fixed, our team, and possibly all the other teams will crunch for projects that ALSO do medical research, but have STATS. Completely understand the dependency on stats. A reminder that the lack of data exports is a temporary situation while we finalize the terms under which they can be made available. Once we can re-enable access, stats at the team and member (for members who have opted to make their data public) will be available again. We clearly never intended for access to be unavailable for this long, but this isn't a matter of if the stats will be available again, but when. Thanks for your continued patience, Juan |
