Re: Data exports & status of Data Processing Agreement

IBM & WCG aren't the only ones having problems complying with GDPR.

Completely irrelevant as far as the issue with WCG and other DC projects are concerned...

This is you, right ?

This is me:

Over 6 billion, and number 35 in the world. I have been doing this for over 15 years. WCG has only been 2 years, sorry to see it go, but Rosetta as you said is a great project as well as F@H. I find out if I loose my bladder to cancer on Aug 28th.

Yes, that is me. I used to use Free-DC, but something happened to Folding there; maybe it is a formatting problem, or maybe they have their own GDPR problem? At any rate, I am now looking at Extreme Overclockers.

I hope for the best for you. At a certain age, we all have cancer concerns. You never know which project is going to yield results in what area. Some are targeted in a given area, and others are of a more basic research nature, which is why I like to spread my machines around.

And don't overlook GPUGrid; they use a different methodology, but have some GPU work (not always). But they do have a new CPU project (Linux only), which is a machine learning project for "teaching" a network to perform calculations for their quantum chemistry app. It is quite interesting and they need a lot more crunchers to help out, which makes it more meaningful I think.

Re: Data exports & status of Data Processing Agreement

The EU should clarify that it is not covered by the GDPR at all.

If only ...

Yes, you're quite right. I could, and indeed would, argue that what we do here is NOT covered by the GDPR. BUT, it's only an argument and that's not clear enough for IBM's lawyers. So they're doing everything by the book (and, by their own admission, too slowly).

All we can do it wait. Shouting, or withdrawing our machine time, is unlikely to cause enough grief to change anything. We're here to do the science. Let's just get on with it!
Well, I know out of own experience that lawyers aren't necessarily the speediest workers, but bottom line is that they had so far 25 months to come up with something. And other DC projects have been down before coming up with an updated agreement within a matter of a week or less.

Re: Data exports & status of Data Processing Agreement

IBM is currently #34 on the fortune 500. It is a VERY large, FOR PROFIT company and therefore comes under much more scrutiny from every corner of the world (literally) than any college or university will ever come under. If a university or college screws this up, it could go unnoticed for quite some time.

IBM? IBM screws it up and it WILL get caught in an audit and acted on. No large company is risking that on something that doesn't generate revenue.

As for having 25 months... I'm not surprised in the least. Most people on this side of the atlantic don't pay attention to what EU regulations MIGHT take effect. They're only ever talked about when they DO take effect AND impact things here. Otherwise nobody cares.

angry Re: Data exports & status of Data Processing Agreement

Do we have any updates on this agreement?

We are in daily contact with the legal team about this and continue to push hard to simplify the terms and process as much as possible. Trust me, wrapping this up continues to be a priority for us.

OK, I am on a team. We crunch against other teams in races. We need stats on all the members in the teams, and the teams, and they need to be able to be viewed on places like stats.free-dc.org. If this is not fixed, our team, and possibly all the other teams will crunch for projects that ALSO do medical research, but have STATS.

Completely understand the dependency on stats. A reminder that the lack of data exports is a temporary situation while we finalize the terms under which they can be made available. Once we can re-enable access, stats at the team and member (for members who have opted to make their data public) will be available again. We clearly never intended for access to be unavailable for this long, but this isn't a matter of if the stats will be available again, but when.

Thanks for your continued patience,
Juan

Thats fine. Maybe when the stats show up again, I will put some back on it, but for now, all 316 cores are on Rosetta, ALSO medical research, so the work is getting done, just with another project. All my GPU's are on F@H, again medical research.

For now WCG is dead as far as me and many others are concerned.
I am also a moderator for Anandtech forums

Well said and agree totally.
Whilst it’s encouraging to hear that stats may be up and running again eventually, I won’t be crunching any WCG until then.
It’s all about the stats for me and sadly the real loser here is the scientific community.

Bloody lawyers eh! Just want the world needs 👎🏻

Well, it's only a loser if people leave WCG over a temporary issue affecting 3rd party stats sites...people like you!

Please stick around for the science if nothing else. You can still get stats here, after all. And badges! Badges are my thing (after the science ofc). biggrin

Re: Data exports & status of Data Processing Agreement

If you read my posts on Rosetta (a really great science project) about all the problems I have had getting it to run consistently, you might come back here. At any rate, I will be putting my new Ryzen 2700 machine here later this year, to supplement my 1700.
I think the project will survive in any case.

Ran Rosetta during the Pentathlon, it suffers from the same problem as MIP1 does and it uses more memory. Couldn't wait to get off of it.
