----------------------------------------  That was it!!BOINC is now up and running!  Thanks a lot The Lazy Slug! You are really good with this server stuff. I am pretty handy with computers myself, but I never had any experience with servers and/or networks. But I am the guy in our office to watch after the server, and if there's a real problem then there will be a 'real' administrator. That goes pretty well so far. But before I understand Server 2003 (SBS) as well as you, I have a long way to go. Just a few more general questions: - Will the movement of my workstation from Computers to SBSComputers affect any of the current settings? So far I noticed no difference. - Can I access the workstation BOINC from my server? I tried to connect with a different computer using <COMPUTERNAME> and <COMPUTERNAME.DOMAIN.LOCAL> but both options didn't work. I also changed the server's BOINC into a local-system service. - The workstation is a Hyperthreading thingy. Is it worth wile to use both threads, or doesn't this make any real difference? [edit] I just see that BOINC is using both threads at the same time for 2 workunits. Is this okay, or should I be using 1 thread only? [/edit] Maybe we can clean this topic up (or create a new one) as some kind of a FAQ. Using the explanation The Lazy Slug did, anyone can deploy BOINC at his network! ----------------------------------------I'm glad we've got you sorted out. Now you need to BOINC on all of your workstations !!!! I had a quick look through the newsgroups for SBS before I recommended this to you and it does not seem to cause any problems. (I would recommend the Microsoft Small Business Server Newsgroup and SmallBizServer for any problems you may have with SBS and Susan Bradley's Blog is always worth a read.) Can I access the workstation BOINC from my server? If you used the latest version of the MST script that you can download from here (Right click the link and select Save Target as...) you can specify which workstations or server can access your BOINC PC. Further instructions are listed previously in this Topic where I first posted the download . The workstation is a Hyperthreading thingy. Is it worth wile to use both threads No. There are quite a number of topics on this. You should go to the Device Profile that your BOINC pc is using and change the number of processors used from the default value of 4 to 1. (You'll still crunch the same amount - the single thread will just process quicker.) I'll tidy up this topic once the MST script is finalised - some permissions options need to be added (mycrofth already put the initial Orca instructions in the FAQs, so hopefully he can update that.) Thanks for all the help you gave me.
----------------------------------------It's all working properly so far. If this 'pilot project'  will work okay, then all other pc's will start crunching soon (it's only 8 or 9 off, but well, every extra pc is some extra crunching power!).I'll sort out the external access later, I used the mst script with the IP address from the server, so it should work! |

I used the mst script with the IP address a) Don't forget you need to use the Internal IP address (I used the external one when I first did it  )b) Don't forget the firewall settings in the group policy. Hello The Lazy Slug,
----------------------------------------Sorry to bother you again, but I still have problems with connecting to the workstation agent via the server. In the mst I created, I filled in the local IP address of the server (192.168.1.1). This address is also to find in the "remote_hosts.cfg" file. I changed the firewall settings in the group policy. I also changed the BOINC service on the server into a local system service. But I keep getting the message that the computer cannot be reached. It doesn't make any difference if I use my computer name or the IP address of the workstation. Do you have any options left? TIA! BTW: How should a remote_hosts.cfg look? Mine has only the IP address in it. |

Wrong IP Address.
The remote_hosts.cfg file should have the IP Address or domain name of the computer that is doing the viewing ! So in your case, the IP Address should be that of your workstation not the server. As you're using SBS, which by default, uses DHCP for each of the workstations, I would suggest you open the remote_hosts.cfg file with Notepad and use the domain name. ie something like myworkstation.mydomain.localDon't forget to press enter after editing the line as the file needs to have an empty line at the end. |
