Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have installed Ubuntu and I was in the process of doing all of the updates, not all updated, when I went to the add/remove I got this message:

failed to check for installed and available applications

this is a major failure of your software management system. please check for broken package with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt -get update' and 'sudo apt -get install _f'

when I went to the synaptic manager and looked for broken packages it was with firefox, no matter what I try to do with the firefox packages I get this:

An error occurred

the following details are provided

E:/var/cache/apt/archives/firefox-3.0_3.0.7 + nobinonly - 0ubuntu0.8.10.1_i286.deb: corrupted file system tarfile - corrupted package archive

What can I do to fix this? and remember I am a noob with linux

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

this fixed it:

First, close down synaptic package manager. Then, open a terminal and clear out the cache. Now, see if you can upgrade your machine.

Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
Code:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Here is a good place for info when playing with linux.. http://www.linuxforums.org/forum . Or grab you a book on it. Had it installed a few times. Learned allot from the forum. In the end though, Mac OS X is allot better but you can't beat free when it comes to linux. I might build a box with intel i7 when the prices come down a bit and put linux on it one day.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just got back from best buy with my new mac book. 2.4 ghz core 2 duo, 2 gb ram.
In the process right now installing XP on the bootcamp partition. I'm so excited!! biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

Congrats. Is this your 1st mac? I bought the 2ghz mac pro a few months back. love it. Thinking of selling my 24 inch iMac to fund upgrading my quad mac to an octo.

I know brink has mentioned he had a PPC MAC.

Do you need to replace the motherboard to to go to octo or does the present one have two processor slots ?

I see we are in for it on Tuesday - 6 to 8 inches of white fun with 30 mph winds and -5 afterwards.

Cheers

This is my first Intel Mac. I have a G4 400Mhz PPC and a G5 1.8Ghz (x2) PPC.
I'm going to sell the G5 on Craig's List shortly and put it against the new Mac Book. Don't think I can get anything for the G4. 20 bucks maybe...if that.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

so far on my new linux box, I have already completed a couple of WU's. The one thing I have noticed every time I install any type of software the files in the cache gets corrupted, but by doing those steps that I have posted above seems to clear out the cache so all works well, I am amazed with all of the programs that can be installed under the add/remove it seems they have everything a person could need/want, I also found out, for the games "I am a gamer" their is allot of strategy games to play more than I would no what to do with, so far I do really like it, it is a learning process, but I have lots of time, being unemployed
