Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I finally got my i3 back up and running. The Nvidia Quadro I got from a friend died and due to some driver issue took forever to get the computer to boot. Its now stable but crunching without a dedicated Graphics card (just the on-board intel).

I did finally get a ruby African Rainfall badge. So that is cool.

Congratulations on that. They are time consuming and don't necessarily play well with others, so keep up the good work on them.

Terrific! Africa Rainfall is grueling.

Is the i3 a laptop? Are you doing anything special to cool it? I have a Surface Pro 3 that tends to get superhot so I don't run it for crunching, wondering if there's something easy that I'm missing.

I don't run laptops for that very reason. They are not built to run 100% cpu for extended periods of time. The purpose, near as I can tell, is to make them as light and thin as possible and skimp on the engineering to keep them cool under load. Tha being said, there are a couple of things which can be done to minimize heat. You can use Tthrottle to smoothly limit the cpu %. You can make sure your fans and vents are kept clean and use a cooling pad underneath. Or, you could limit the number of cpus/threads you use or disable hyperthreading (if available.). Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers

It does help, thank you! You've got me thinking about the throttling...I've had great success with Ryzen Master, the AMD overclocking utility for my 3950x, it has an "Eco" mode that easily downvolts the CPU to where it's running all threads at 100% and I can't even hear the fans. Intel has a similar utility that I use on my i7-6700U but is not compatible with my Surface Pro so I've been stuck.

I see now there are some third party apps that may do some turnkey undervolting, so I will research those and hopefully I can run my Surface Pro at "100%" and get some good production out of it.

Good crunching to all!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

SD Surfer,

my i3 is desk-top mini-ITX build from many years ago. the i3 i pretty low power and keeps pretty cool on its stock air cooler. Its an LGA1150 socket. I have been waiting for the i7-4790k (fastest for the socket) to come down in price on e-bay but they stay stubbornly high. As the days go by, it gets harder and harder to justify upgrading this old rig. I find myself looking at some of the newer CPUs and am getting close to pulling the trigger.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Element6, good to know! I may just be fighting basic engineering and/or physics trying to get my laptop to do something it just doesn't want to do, but haven't given up yet.

Good to hear how your build is working.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The best laptop I've used so far for crunching is an Asus gaming laptop. Since it is made for gaming it has good cooling and built-in hotkeys let you select what mode you'd like from silent, performance, or turbo mode. Normally I would say avoid laptops for crunching, but this one is pretty much purpose built for power use. The fans can get loud on performance and especially turbo mode, but silent mode it can go on indefinitely and stay reasonably cool. Good day.

That sounds like they actually put some engineering moxie into it so it can operate at whatever you like. Causes me to think about how they do that: modulating the cpu or undervolting ?

Yes, it automatically downclocks the CPU and/or GPU to stay within the thermal and power envelope. All you need to do is set the mode via hotkey. There's also software that comes with it for manually setting temperature and performance limits, if desired.
