Glad the wife is O.K.
----------------------------------------Keeping both of my power hog crunchers going throughout the summer...try not to spend much time looking at the electric bill just pay it! Luckily this summer has been on the cool side so far in the north country. Bulk of my work done is from two machines, a 2x 12 core AMD server (350 watts at the wall) and a 4x 12 core AMD server (607 watts at the wall). That's almost 1000 watts continuous just from two machines but it is 72 cores. Wish I could afford some of those Intel E5 cpu's, but at $1000+ a pop not sure the higher efficiency would be worth it. Going to upgrade my regular PC's once the 14 nm Broadwell Intel's come out though. Enjoy whats left of summer and keep on crunching... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ryan222h at Jul 19, 2014 11:57:39 PM] |

That is a lot of cores to have going, but you are still under 14 watts per core so I would think that is pretty good. I am quite sure my old Dell 8 cores are nowhere near that efficient.
----------------------------------------The good news here is my basement is finally dry, so the cleanup continues. My wife is still quite sore but getting better each day. Crunch on Cheers

Put all your crunchers in the basement to keep it dry. I could move some of them into the basement, but not the two Dell rackservers. They are just too noisy. I did have one of them in the basement when I was setting it up and I could hear it upstairs. I am quite sure my wife would not permit it. She already lets me indulge myself with computer stuff so I do not wish to disturb a working solution. Cheers

Well, we have acquired another car. I found a used one, 2003 with 86,000 miles on it. Since it has been many years since I have been in the car market, I was amazed at what used cars are costing now. I was seeing cars with over 100,000 miles going for $6,000 to $7,000. That was way more expensive than my mindset. Even some cars with more than 250,000 miles were costing a couple of thousand dollars. Whew! So I consider myself pretty lucky to have found this one for less than $3500.
----------------------------------------I spent yesterday replacing the rear sway bar links. I was told I would need a torch to get them off, but with penetrating oil, time and some elbow grease, they grudgingly came off. Installing the new ones was the easy part. The next things will be be to get a tune up, and replace a couple of the tires. By the time I am done I will have stuck about another $500 to $600 into it. I hope it lasts a while, here in the land of rust and snow. Cheers

You can thank MnDot for the rust. They put way to much salt down in the winter. Vehicles in general are all high priced. The new ones are out of reach for allot who don't want high payments. Just picked up a new truck myself after owning jeeps since 2004. Can't believe it gets better gas mileage than my 4 door wrangler I just sold. Since I can't work on vehicles any more, I go with new and get the life time bumper to bumper warranty so I don't have to touch them again. Pretty soon we won't have to even steer as the automated cars will be here soon.

Pretty soon we won't have to even steer as the automated cars will be here soon. Probably will be safer too. At least they could not do any worse than some of the drivers I've seen. Would like to see the electric car with 500 mile range, battery good for 300,000 miles before needing replacement, 10 minute recharge time and electricity availability from some kind of renewable. Also priced under $20,000. If I can't have that I want a hydrogen powered vehicle with similar specs.. Am I a dreamer or what ? Cheers

Cheers Not quite...there are some exciting things on the horizon Tesla's new battery factory will make things cheaper through economies of scale: http://www.triplepundit.com/2014/08/tesla-panasonic-gigafactory/ Supposed breakthrough in battery capacity: http://www.cnbc.com/id/101889606 All we need is the super battery to create a massive shift away from fossil fuels. ![]() |

All we need is the super battery to create a massive shift away from fossil fuels. If need any solar power to charge those batteries, there is plenty on Spain. Since government start paying from it, grid has been overflow by solarstuf, even on night times. Also market of diesel-generators did skyrocket. http://www.thelocal.es/20131112/spains-solar-police-to-kick-in-your-door So funny ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by ultimaThule at Aug 7, 2014 9:57:11 AM] |
