Re: Minnesota Crunchers

what would be a good at a reasonable price nvidea graphic card to use/

The price is going to be quite a bit more for nvidia cards.
Some things to note:
Only get GTX models (or tesla's tongue ).
Wait to buy after the 6xx sieries comes out. The 5xx and 4xx will drop a lot. They are already dropping in price.
The 550 TI has an unusual mixed-density memory architecture causing problems at some grid projects. Stay away from them.
I buy EVGA because they have a lifetime warranty if you register the card on the website (most of their cards). You will pay a little more for EVGA because if this.
Your still talking 180 bucks a card for a 560 GTX.
You can still find the 460 series at newegg for around 130 bucks after rebate.
Here is the card I want...maybe 2 of them. whistling

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Chalk up a milestone for our team. Looks like I returned the 1st GPU wu today. laughing

I saw that knreed had posted that about you. Congratulations!

I'm not expecting to receive any of these betas, since it's Windows-only so far and my only Windows machine has a slow card. :( Sure hope they expand the GPU beta to Linux soon!

Thanks. I hope the Linux betas come soon too. My main rig is dual boot with my ATI 6950 and want to switch over from windows. Hopefully it will run cooler too so I can raise the number of cores to crunch. I love this warm weather but my crunchers don't. cool

Congrats on being #1. Looks like the warmth is staying for a while. Ice out is only days away.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

It's going on now. Take a look at the GPU forum for updated info on usable GPU's.

Maybe if I slowed down and actually read the forum titles I would have seen it!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Can anyone using ubuntu 10.10 recommend a wireless usb stick that works without constant configuring? The list on ubuntu forums takes to long to go through and no solid confirmation if it works out of the box. Prefer finding someone who is using one now without issues. Was considering getting win7 on a deal from the egg (been waiting on this for 125 bucks) but would like to keep ubuntu crunching. Only have 2 days to decide before the deal ends from the egg.

I did find this.... https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/catalog , but don't know anything about these. I do have a linksys AE1000 USB stick. Tried to get it to work but gave up. Plan on moving this cruncher downstairs when the weather warms up but have to get the wireless working first.

Disregard folks. I pulled the trigger (credit card) and ordered win 7 pro 64. After going through the list on ubuntu forums and seeing issues on just about every one, I gave up. The win7 deal doesn't pop up much so figured I will dual boot this cruncher like my main rig.

My main machine is running Ubuntu 11.10, I don't have a usb stick wireless adapter, I do have a Lynksys wireless-g usb network adapter, with speed booster, and it works great, configured once and never had a prob with it.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Thanks. Already installed win7 on that rig to get my wireless going. Was using 10.10. 11.4 and up didn't impress me much so dropped back to 10.10.

On another note, lost one socket on my dually today. Still using the other until I RMA it later. Have to finish my climate wu's first. 12 threads gone for now. crying
