Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just do what tim the tool time Taylor does, super charge it. Just don't blow anything up in the process.
P4's are a bit old. Probably eating a good amount of juice too compared to current chips. You could build a nice SB rig for under 500, or a little more with a current GPU. Probably cheaper if you skimp on some parts.
I got hooked on xeon chips. Pricey suckers but hard workers.
New egg usually has good deals on do it yourself complete systems. Let us know what you get.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

the first one listed paid $400
the second one listed I paid $100

500 for basically a quad core. Nice find. You might be able to upgrade those processors to quads later down the road. If you can find them, around 100 bucks. Let us know how good the crunch.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Mclaver, you sure are pumping out the points. How many rigs? These all at home?

All my machines are at home. I have 19 in the house from an AMD 6400 to an Intel 990x. I am building them from parts as a hobby, then put them on WCG 24x7. And I cant wait until WCG supports GPU. All my cpus are dedicated to WCG. I get 10 times the BOINC points for GPU work then I get for CPU work. Once WCG supports GPU, I will shift all my GPUs to WCG. Our team normally gets 200,000-300,000 Boinc points per day. I normally contribute 60,000-70,000 Boinc points per day to WCG, but I contribute 600,000-700,000 Boinc points in total, with my GPUs. It will be ineresting to watch team points go up when GPU is supported

Nice farm. Will be nice when WCG goes GPU crunching. One rig with multiple gpu's will kick some serious points. I have a ATI 6950 ready when it goes online. Eying the 7000 series.

There are a lot of good AMD/ATI cards out there for not that much money.
For example 60 bucks after rebate...
The high end card is only 170 bucks after rebate.
Time to upgrade coffee
