Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Oh piffle. (Just checking whether you guys have heard that particular expression before...)

That brings me back to my childhood. My mom used to say that all the time. I can still hear it...."Mom I don't feel good, can I say home from school?" She would say, "Oh piffle, get dressed right now or you will miss the bus." frustrated
Most of the time it did not work. wink

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Anyway, our Internet connection went down today, and when I got home, that had wreaked havoc with my crunching machines -- a bunch of error WUs on one, and a couple had run dry. Oh well, hardly the end of the world, much better than a fried machine.

But I wish BOINC could be fixed so loss of Internet connection can't mess up WUs. I guess I should keep a bigger cache and limit when my crunchers try to connect. We don't have a lot of ISP problems, but they're not really rare.

Surprised your wu's error out due to network issues. Never had this happen. Only messages stating cannot connect, then would retry in an hour or so.

Stinks having the well run dry. Usually set 1 day cache to avoid this problem.

Saw on the news it was snowing/sleeting up by ely. This keeps up, we will have a blizzard by turkey day. Stay warm folks.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Wow, snow in Ely already! We may get scattered frost all the way down here tonight.

Internet failure when trying to upload a result seems to cause CEP2 units to restart from their most recent checkpoint and C4CW (and maybe DSFL -- haven't much experience with it yet) to error. :( Sekerob has commented on this kind of thing being a long-lived issue in BOINC.

OK. I am a little confused. If it is trying to upload a result, isn't the WU done? If it is done, why would there be a checkpoint issue ? I run some machines which are only intermittently attached to the internet and I have never experienced this problem on an upload.

Cheers

It's not the WUs that are in the process of trying to upload that are harmed. It's other ones that are running when the failed upload occurs. Not all sciences seem to be affected -- on my set-ups, C4CW WUs error out and CEP2 WUs revert to a checkpoint.
