Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I agree with you the high end crowd will go for the SB overclockable chips where the embedded graphics will be irrelevant for them. But do not underestimate the overall strategy of Intel. They are out to dominate any market they are in, maybe not right away, but eventually. Maybe the embedded graphics are more of a "proof of concept" iteration at this stage. Remember I am not a chip engineer, but merely speculating on some possible reasons for why they do what they do. cool

I think Intel was right to embed graphics in SB, and the 2000 and 3000 series both make sense. The only bad decision was which graphics was stuck on which CPU. The 3000 series graphics should be available on at least some more of the lower end chips...

Some "hackers" have already put the embedded graphics to use alongside discrete graphics so that isn't really a waste anymore...

In other news, Newegg has SB stuff for sale now, I think it went live yesterday. Prices are real good.... so tempting.... but then I look at my ICF build costs and reality sets in LOL.

Sorry for the tone, just trying to be helpful.

Sorry for that comment, I had a bad day yesterday. blushing Thanks again for the tips. peace

Happens to the best of us....

When I built my sister's computer a few years back, she was getting some flakey GPU stuff happening. At first I thought it was a bad card (Radeon 4830) but I put that card in MY system and everything was fine, even tortured with FurMark. So then I tried my card (Radeon 4670) in her system, expecting the same symptoms, but no, that was fine too. So I'm pretty sure her power supply was just a bit too weak to power the 4830, but okay with the lesser 4670. Both cards have been just fine ever since.

I've done ATI cards in every build after I ditched the 3DFX Voodoo5 oh so many years ago. My old Radeon 9800 Pro (originally $350 or so) was sold to Sgt Joe a while back with some other parts for like $40 I think. Still worked. Fanboy? Guilty as charged....

That is a good point. It is a Dell 8100 with a HD 5770 1 GB GDDR5 and only a 350 watt power supply. yikes. I may have to sneak in a bigger PS, if I can.

I still run a radeon 9700 and a X1300 in my other SLOW crunchers. I also had some 3dfx cards in the day. My son used to play MS Monster Truck Madness with the 3dfx card. I remember the game opens with the big 3dfx logo. Who bought 3dfx out?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Been looking at crunching numbers over at xtremesystems and boy are these chips impressive. Biting my tounge trying not to hit the buy button. Still plan on waiting for the xeon equivalent. By then, better boards should be out and hope to be working by then. Looks like I'll go under the knife shortly. Should find out in a few weeks the details.
For those interested, here is some good info on what these babies can do...

Yeah, 350W is pretty small. My sister was having issues with a 500W!

Some of 3dfx Interactive's creditors filed bankruptcy claims, but NVidia then bought them out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3dfx#Acquisition_and_bankruptcy

Wow, thanks for the info and link. I'm drooling! biggrin Like you, I plan to wait and watch how this all falls out over the next 6 months or a year. I purposely didn't invest too much in my new crunching machine so as to save up for the next one!
Looks like I'll go under the knife shortly. Should find out in a few weeks the details.

Wishing you the best with all that! Keep us posted.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Some of the forums around are stating some issues with these 1st generation boards. Figure in 6 months, better boards and options should be out. Since I prefer dualies, will wait and hope the xeon equivalent don't cost a house payment. Should see bigger caches with them. For now, pretty happy with my dual quad core westmere system. I can upgrade this to dual sixes later when the prices come down.
Thanks for the wishes. Put this off along time but don't have the option anymore. Stinks getting old I guess. Will update when the time comes.

Good luck getting your problems fixed.Getting old is sometimes the pits, but it beats the alternative.

Cheers

I installed an HD 5870 card and upgraded the PSU from the original 350W to a 600W
