With the pricing I've seen on Sandy Bridge, I don't think it's worth the extra money just to get Hyper-Threading, I'd probably just get the regular quad-core but do an "easy" 4ghz overclock.

Not sure the price difference but I'll wait awhile for solid reviews before committing to SB. 1st batch is a little risky to me. But with SB out now, you could probably score a i7 or i5 cheaper now. I figure in 4 to 6 months better boards and stuff will be out. I don't like being a guinea pig so will let those with deep pockets do the leg work 1st. If you do get one, let us know how it goes.

SB CPUs are faster than the current i5s and i7s for the same price, and particularly so when overclocked a little. The new $300 SB CPUs match or beat the current fastest i7 extreme which is $1000. Intel is probably going to have to do some shedding of their existing prices if they want to keep selling the old stock. Check out anandtech.com or tomshardware.com for good performance benchmarking and reviews. Really, the only reason to buy something other than SB is if you're worried about 1st-batch reliability, or you're in the sub-$100 CPU market, as AMD is better there still. I was a pretty early adopter of Intel P45/Core 2 Quad and that worked out fine for me...

I read a report from anandtech which provided some real good info on SB. Seems every intel upgrade produces about 30% increase from previous versions. Was surprised to read how powerful the embedded graphics on the 3000 series can do compared to AMD or Nvidia's top of the line gpu's. Power savings are outstanding. Not a whole lot of room for OCing. I've had great luck with xeons. Never used an AMD before. Should start seeing folks with builds shortly to hear what they have to say. I'll take a wait and see approach before building my next rig. Am satisfied with westmere for now.

The lease is up on my computer at work and I had to pick out a new workstation from the Lenovo site and keep it below 1400 buck. Did you know that Lenovo does not carry any i7 CPUs for there workstations or professional PCs!!!! Ridicules. Ended up getting a X3440 Xeon. Anyone know how good (or bad) this processor is? I'm stuck with it for 3 years so I hope it's a good CPU. ![]() Check this out for your processor. Not top of the line but pretty cost effective. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+X3440+%40+2.53GHz Sick as heck on Wednesday. Better on Thursday, recovering. Felt cold and shivered all day Wednesday. Slept about 12 hours. Much better today, Friday. ![]() Cheers

The 3000 series could slightly beat the $50 GPU but the $100 owned it. "Top of the line" GPUs are $200-400 and probably 4x-8x faster. Intel was dumb - their high end processors shouldn't be the ones with the 3000 series GPU, high end processors end up getting discrete graphics anyway.... stupid! Tom's Hardware points this out very well.

Tom's Hardware points this out very well. Intel is only dumb if you expect the high end gaming crowd to get these chips because of the graphics. I think Intel is going to push the graphics market to the middle and squeeze the discrete graphics card makers to the high end. Who wants a low or middle range card when it is built in ? Remember, AMD owns ATI. It is nice to be able to say you have the fastest, but the middle is where the money is. Intel is aiming for the high chip sales volume. If their pricing is aggressive enough, they will get it and AMD will stay on the defensive. Cheers

Hey Joe, glad your feeling better. That bug is a son of a gun. Been lucky not to get hit so far (knock on wood).
----------------------------------------Here is a good article to read...... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sandy-bridge-efficienct-32-nm,2831.html . The charts are interesting to see how the graphics chip do compared to the others. I was never fond of integrated graphics but for things like my Mac mini, works ok. The high end SB chips shouldn't have any embedded graphics at all but the sales folks at places like best buy will push this garbage touting no need for a separate graphics cards.

Bearcat, my son's PC is now getting the BSOD from crunching on his single precision 5770 ATI card. So I stopped GPU crunching on his since he get's really mad when it happens. Can't say that I blame him. I'm sure it would be fine if I cranked the fan up but he does not like the noise, it's loud.
My mac book seems to be handling it fine. Although the refresh is considerably slower. So I just snooze the gpu when I'm using it. I think when the EVGA GTX 470 goes down in price I may pick one up and SLI the two together. ![]() |

Try reducing one thread at a time to see what happens. Since reducing 2 threads (14 of 16), have had zero issues. Am doing small incremental increases on the GPU to see how high I can go. Couple more notches and will be maxes out. Takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to crunch a wu but since adjusting, it's now 1:08 or so. Not sure if I want to try with my mini. Swore I wouldn't use it for crunching but you know how that goes. Figure the gpu's would drop in price after the show so looking between the 470 or ATI 6950. Almost the same price.
