Been thinking of GPU crunching too on my new box. When you say CEP2 crunches good on ssd, are you talking the OS and boinc on ssd or boinc only on ssd? Was thinking of getting an 80gb ssd for crunching but don't know much about them.

Intel X18-M and X25-M drives are supposed to be one of the best drives to get.
I was reading somewhere on this board that Boinc and the CEP2 project work really well running on a ram drive or ssd drives for some reason. I just skimmed over the post. I will try and find it again. Parts should be arriving tomorrow for my build. ![]() |

I will try and find it again. That doesn't make any sense. These projects should all run exclusively in real, physical RAM. I guess if you just don't have enough of that, you could improve things by moving your swap file to an SSD, but it's gotta be cheaper to just buy more RAM unless you're out of empty DIMM sockets...

Have checked all 3 of my crunchers running ubuntu and my swap file is zero. My guess is have a very fast drive or ssd for CEP2. Tried dedicating my 8 core harpertown and didnt get a whole lot done. Hope to get at least my 1 year badge soon then pulling the plug on that project.

Hi all! Cold enough for you? I don't care as long as the car starts! It is only December. If you live anywhere in the 5 state area you should make sure your car starts down to -30F or make arrangements plug it in. Royal pain in the neck for all mechanical things when it gets that cold. Cheers

Nice. Sick of it already? It's not even january. Just looked at your link. Where the heck did that come from? Wasn't supposed to be that much when forecasted a few days ago.
----------------------------------------My good deal chip I bought isn't going to work out. To hot for my case. Strong but hot. If anyone is intesrested in a xeon x5482, (C0 stepping, 150 watts), will sell it. Suggest a very good ventilated case of water cooling though.

Suggest a very good ventilated case of water cooling though. Looks like we will only get about 2 to 5 Inches(5 to 13 cm) of snow but the cold will be coming on the backside. High for Sunday predicted to be 0F(-18C). maybe you should try running that hot chip out in the garage in the cold Just kidding. Maybe it does need water cooling but can the case support more or bigger fans ? Or you could try underclocking it to get it run cooler. But I suppose that would defeat the purpose of having the higher end chip. the only other suggestion would be to modify the case by putting a heat pipe directly on the heatsink and putting the most powerful exhaust fan you can find on the end of it to try to pull the heat out.Cheers
