Re: Can we get some help in this thread from a CA Please!

Adywebb,

With regards to preventing people from posting obscene (etc) posts, I'm afraid that a post stating what we've done is not possible. Think about it this way: if we tell everyone what measures are in place to prevent them from making obscene posts, it makes it that much easier to circumvent those measures. As such, that information will probably not be made public.

As is the case with a lot of what World Community Grid does, you will have to take our word for it that we are doing something. After all, we tell you that we're working on getting more research projects, but nothing more definitive until the project is actually launched. Hopefully members can spare some of the confidence in our project as a whole for this issue on the forums.

Hi, Nelsoc
Why?

The WCG is a philanthropic edeavour, not a top secret multi lateral business. Why can't the donours and sponsors know what you are doing? What possible reason could there be to not tell people what type of project you are hoping to have next and regular progress updates. Charitable organisations thrive on this type of communication and wither without it. Try to remember you only have friends in this and no enemies other than the ones you create yourself!

There is no need for more than general 'glossy brochure' type information to be given.

AND, If a particular behaviour is blatantly against the rules of the organisation and action is taken, you have an obligation to your donours and all interested parties to be very public about any and all consequences. We don't want to know that you used whatever subroutine to block transmissions. We want to know if there has been a warning issued or that the person been blocked or whatever is appropriate in your eyes.

If this information is not made available and particularly where the behaviour continues unabated, we the people, will assume that nothing has been done and make our own appropraiate decisions about what can be done as an individual. Trust is earned not given, show us why we should trust in the face of apparently unnecessary secrecy.

We have given our trust by supporting a science project which thusfar has no published papers or peer reviews. Don't ask for more show us we should give more.

Re: Can we get some help in this thread from a CA Please!

@ozylynx:

The reasons we aren't allowed to discuss a lot of what we do behind the scenes are numerous. I've been told what they are, and I while I may not agree with many of them, some are necessary just to keep the people who fund this whole thing happy.

Some of our donors and sponsors do in fact know what we are doing. Namely, IBM, who donates the hardware and personnel to run the project, and the Advisory Board who approve all the projects that we run here. I don't mean that to trivialize the donation of our members, since certainly that is of equal importance, but the way you phrased it makes it sound like nobody really knows what's going on. I assure you that IBM and our Advisory Board know what is going on, and they are doing everything they can to ensure that we continue to have good, humanitarian scientific research for our members to do.

It's sort of a chicken and egg scenario. Without IBM, WCG would have no way to keep work going for the members. Of course, without the members, WCG (and therefore IBM) would have no reason to keep the whole thing going. But, IBM technically came first, so, as far as WCG goes, they are the ones who make the decisions.

As far as trust goes, we've run HPF, FAAH, and HDC so far, and have pulled HPF2 to prevent our members from doing work that resulted in a large number of errors. We also strive to continually update the site with features that members request (yes, we do know what members want, but we can't always get to everything). If we are running short on trust, there is not a lot we can do right now, except to keep working as hard as we have been for the past two years and hope that people have patience. If that is too much to ask, then it's too much to ask, and I'm very sorry for that.

Re: Can we get some help in this thread from a CA Please!

@nelsoc,

I fear we're straying from the root source & cause of the grieve, which is that the members would like to see affirmative action on issues we had a number of weekends in a row, where one member, signing e.g. the herewith linked post: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=9294#73180 goes rampant and looses all regard for anyone on the forum. His scribes, including 'That little Hitler' are still there.

Whilst that may not bear down so hard on the American side of the Atlantic, this side and particular NW&E Europe this comparison is the worst one can define.

Several times i wrote about Sticks & Stones....Well i can, but that does not mean we have to tolerate this and let it be. What we are asking for is in essence, a person who can be 'on the board' so to speak, that has the ability to shut down wildly astray exchanges. One or Two senior C.A's that have this capacity. Merely lock, not delete/edit, as i feel that such things require second opinion.

Anyway, i would expect whatever non-disclosable measures u have to tighten up so that repetitions do not go on the loose and offend members to the core and can last from Friday Night well into Monday Afternoon.

thanks

Re: Can we get some help in this thread from a CA Please!

Hmmm, thats interesting - when I looked at the Suggestions/Feedback section - the last post for this thread was showing Oct 31, 2006 9:06:06 PM but with no visible username, but when you come to the thread the last one was Scribes at 6:58:24 PM - wonder if this is the new secret 'anti-flamer' device in action thinking

And I wonder who it was that it blocked from posting cool

It looked like it was manually done. Dagorath posted and a tech was watching. Kinda funny to see it happen in real time.
