Movieman, I don't think any of the CAs gives 2 hoots about you and your team. Why don't you and your following of dorks go back to Rosetta where you came from?

Hi it's Dave
----------------------------------------Unfortunately I'm just a cruncher like you and although it says Community Advisor alongside this post my "powers" are limited to being able to post in a forum which IBM should be reading. A kind of Hot Line to IBM which at best should be described as a luke warm line to IBM. As CA's we fought hard to be able to moderate posts but we were granted only locking priviledges, however, on account of one occasion when a thread was locked which caused further of these pathetic "outrages" which break out on this forum every now and again even this awesome forum power you speak of was withdrawn. This leaves us all exposed to individuals who like to kick off just like a school playground and others that like to join in and shout "fight, fight, fight" who just hang around this forum waiting for any such opportunity. So a CA can try and bring some sanity to a thread but that's all What is needed is some IBM Clout around here but that seems to be very thin on the ground. IBM created this "monster" and I still suspect they didn't expect the crunchers to be so passionate about this project the idea of it running in teh background kind of applies to IBM's handling of this forum too. I've been campaigning for IBM's input into this forum almost from day 1 when a batch of dodgy Work Units were first unleashed upon us causing my brief return to grid.org and still although improved IBM's focus is on running the science not talking to the grass roots crunchers. So you are left with the likes of me to share in your pain. The World is a crazy place and the Internet just reflects it I'm on the luke warm line to IBM we need to address the issues surrounding points as with the arrival of BOINC I think they have become pointless. IBM claimed they were working on the issue but even as a Community Advisor I have no feedback. You will notice in recent posts I have backed Run Time and therefore Work Units completed instead of points (points now have no bearing on anything measurable) if IBM can't address this issue soon I suggest we knock points on the head and make Run Time King. After all yes some of us have the slowest of Semprons and others the Fastest of multicore Xeons but we are all here to complete research into HIV and Cancer at the moment. If you didn't get your fix of points would you switch off your PC? Food for thought Dave ![]() |

Hi mate
I would still crunch most definately, points or not. If everyone thinks back to the very first time they looked at the WCG site or heard it on the news or read it on the web, everyones first thought was, isn't that absoultely fantastic crunching to cure disease. Then they signed up, started crunching and only then did the teams, points competition etc etc rear it's ugly head. Now we even have ( valid I do believe for those who want the points. It's still crunching either way.) Windoze versus Linux discrepancy issues. I can't remember who or where it was said, but someone in a thread said can't the points just go away. Excellent point in my opinion, just have a ranking on the number of wu's crunched, which after all is why 99% of us are here. The original Seti@home project way back when I joined it in about 95 I think LOL, used just number of units crunched. You still have a comptitive element to it and if people whant to spend a lot of money on cutting edge technology to crunch then fine, but no one is penalised for OS, software etc, etc. Just my tuppence, but I'd still be here. Cheers all Jacko |

[L2G] Slapshot.... reflected on the WU Only measurement. Suppose u would only do FAAH and another HDC and a third one a mix...... present construct does not allow to measure contribution by project. I'd love to see that.

[L2G] Slapshot.... reflected on the WU Only measurement. Suppose u would only do FAAH and another HDC and a third one a mix...... present construct does not allow to measure contribution by project. I'd love to see that. I was originally meaning a global figure for all projects at WCG, but yes I suppose you would get people just crunching HDC units cos they are quicker and people crunching FAAH units would complain. ROFL , I really think it is a pointless task trying to satisfy everyone, I would however think that yes contribution by project would be a nice stat to see. Cheers Jacko |

Hence the run time thing being King
----------------------------------------If you talk to your friends about the grid you don't say you have X Points you say we've contributed 60,000+ years of number crunching to medical research on the WCG you say we have the equivalent of 50,000 PC's running every day to find cures and treatments for HIV and Cancer (then you talk about Global Warming and then move onto how in the future we might crunch to find a solution )Words such as Altruism and Philanthropic surround this project - this doesn't sit well with "My Contribution is bigger than yours". We all give what we can in the hope of some long term benefit. Maybe we won't reap the benefits of this project but maybe our Children will. Surely that has to be a better outcome of our contribution than simply 2,713,672 "points" (Mostly ill gained by using BOINC )Dave ![]() |

Excellent mate
Yep you've sold me on that idea Dave. Run Time would do nicely, so long as it was total for the individual and total for the team, that would be cool. Average time doesn't work though as if your p.c breaks ie ROFL the fan in the psu goes down one day with no crunching sure knocks an average down.Get on that Luke Warm Line to IBM. Cheers Jacko |
