Thanks for the stats update, Bill.
It won't be easy to stay in the top 100, when there are corporate teams with large numbers of mostly idle computers. Our own contributions have increased recently back toward 60k/day, and we can hope for 70k before year end. Crunch on, Brewers! FB |

I realize that it's just a matter of time; there's no way that we will still be in the Top 100 on our 3rd birthday because most likely there are just too many large teams that are coming up from behind. I really didn't look back behind us very far, but when teams join that are generating several hundred thousand points per day, they can catch up very quickly.
I did discover that when I switched to the BOINC agent a couple of days ago, that my daily points nearly doubled. Of course, that's still not saying much for ME, but we do what we can do. Anyway, let me encourage the rest of our team to give BOINC a try and see how your performance is; in any event, I think that WCG is phasing out the UD agent by early next year. On another topic -- brewing -- I'm excited to report that I've had 86 new members join my 'Grow-Hops' group in just the past week; it appears that most are looking for options to the impending hop shortage. Our membership is now at 495 and my group was just six months old on November 21st. Any brewers who are interested in adding a new dimension to their homebrewing, visit: www.tinyurl.com/3au2uv.Cheers. |

Hi Bill,
Yes, I agree, BOINC is better than UD for a number of reasons. I've been using in on both P3 and P4 class machines running Windows since early 2006, and I am happy with the "install as a service" option which runs the program all the time as a background task, as long as the machine is turned on. I have yet to try the latest BOINC, as I am still running the "tweaked" 5.4.9 (at the time, it had a code change to better estimate processing power for WCG's calculations). I have only found one machine on which it routinely quits working; otherwise, it's stable and keeps out of everything's way. It does also "give" more points than the UD client for the same amount of work (but that's because it estimates work ability better) I have found that it can get confused when uninstalling, and a manual uninstall is usually required - but I'm going to guess that the new versions correct those problems. In any case, thanks for the report on your own experiences, and best of luck with growing hops. Cheers FB |

Looks like three more days ... possibly two ... and we'll pass the South Africa Team to move us back into #84.
We're racing toward the end of the year and trying to stay ahead of as many as we can. It's going to be VERY close with some of these teams. The one's to watch are at http://tinyurl.com/2fhwdm. Am getting ready to start bottling 15 gallons (3 x 5-gallon) today, and MAYBE will be brewing tomorrow. Depends on what the boss has to say about that. Cheers. |

EDITED to update the following team links and their positions.
----------------------------------------I had a good look behind us for any teams that are catching up real fast from way behind, and there are only two 'shooting stars' even remotely close: Team MySaoirse in #111 crunching about 500K per day Team GNi in #146 now crunching over 800K per day. [EDIT: After crunching over a million points per day for four days, GNi has suddenly dropped to 82,768 ... then ... 52,350 yesterday ... and 42,696 today; maybe they're no longer a threat ... ... but I hate to see WCG lose the points even more. ]There are a few other teams gaining besides those two and the seven listed here at http://tinyurl.com/3bsv4x, but they are so far behind that I don't think more than a few will be able to catch us before our next birthday. So let's keep up the good work and make staying in the Top-100 our goal for the next year. We're now #84, so we can't let more than 16 teams pass us unless we pass someone ourselves. I think we should definitely pass IBM 26RA LoveTeam within a year, and also have a good chance of passing Team Leadmar ( Russia ), too. Here's a link to keep track of those and other teams: http://tinyurl.com/yulxqf And one more list = http://tinyurl.com/2khudb Cheers. I had a good look behind us for any teams that are catching up real fast ...<snip>... So let's keep up the good work and make staying in the Top-100 our goal for the next year. We're now #84, so we can't let more than 16 teams pass us unless we pass someone ourselves. Thanks, Bill. I appreciate the continued updates - it keeps pushing me to get my own BOINCing improved even if I can't seem to convince anyone else. In my own goals for improvement, the Intel Core2Quad PC is still in the "almost ready" stage - after I returned the first motherboard for not having a SATA RAID, I got an Intel G33 chipset board from Gigabyte with a 4 channel RAID, and 2 Seagate 7200.11 perpendicular recording SATA 3 with 32MB cache - only to have one arrive DOA... So, I'm waiting... impatiently....for...UPS...to...arrive... On the good news side, AMD has finally started shipping the "Phenom" series Agena quad core CPUs - and at a reasonable price. I expect a round of price cuts in the processor arena around January to match the one we've been seeing in DDR RAM chips (you can get 2x1GB matched set DDR2 800 for $49). With drives continuing their slow glide downward, it won't be long before the $99 computer is abundant. Then, the main problem will be where to put them all... Cheers FB |

Does anyone have a "Real" Eggnog fudge-style brownie recipe?
There are basically two floating around the internet (it's amazing the number of places that have copies of the same ones), and neither one is a fudge style. In fact, one doesn't even have any eggnog in it (just walnuts). the other one does have eggong, but it's a "cake style" brownie with lots of flour. If not, I'll have to make one up. Cheers FB |

Does anyone have a "Real" Eggnog fudge-style brownie recipe? ... snip Sorry, Fred, but I have never even heard of anything like that. Sounds good, though. Hmmmm. Eggnog fudge-style brown ale???? Nahhhh. As for all that techno-speak, I can understand maybe a quarter of it, if I'm lucky. But it sounds like you're able to keep on the cutting edge. I only seem to upgrade when one of our cheap computers crash, and then I replace it with another cheap computer ... which is always yesteryears super-duper job. Hey, I can manage to do everything that I need to, so I'm happy. My 'Grow-Hops' group has made some phonomenal strides -- now up to 621 members and it's still less than seven months old. Lot's of enthusiasm in the group, too, as we've been discussing preparations for a rhizome exchange in the early spring. Probably won't be near enough to go around, but we'll do the best that we can. As usual, if any brewers read this, you are all cordially invited to visit 'Grow-Hops '. Cheers. |
