Hello friends!
I am using BOINC 5.4.11 on a T41 laptop. Things run smoothly, until I need to move the laptop. When I restart the computer, the computation picks up from the last checkpoint - this may mean that more of 10% of a unit processing is lost. I have set my preferences to "leave tasks in memory" and this works great when a task is suspended (for example, if I lose power and have to go on batteries on a while.) But when I need to move the laptop, and I either standby or hibernate it, when the machine comes up, I always get the following message from the executing task: World Community Grid|Task xxxx exited with zero status but no 'finished' file World Community Grid|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project. I have tried suspending the WCG project. This works fine, leaving the task in memory, and resuming the project continues OK. But when I suspend the project and then standby/hibernate, when the computer comes back on, I get the above message. The message comes up even before I resume the project. The task is then removed from memory and when it is restarted, it picks up at the last checkpoint, thus losing computation. As I need to move the laptop around several times a day, this leads to a signinficant loss of computation. Is there a way to avoid that? To prevent the tasks from exiting? Or, if that is not possible, to force them to checkpoint before I need to move the laptop? Thanks much! George |

A laptop, you say? I think we have seen this before.
There is no way to force a checkpoint. If the projects could checkpoint more often, they would. Why are you suspending before putting it in standby? My memory is hazy, but this could be the cause of your problem. Try putting the computer in standby without suspending BOINC. If that doesn't work, we'll look into it further for you. |

Follow the Hibernation instructions exactly as given at WCGWiki and on this forum by DavidHobbs e.g it's linked thru from this post Windows XP Hibernation .......standby wont work for whatever reason.

Thanks for the quick answers!
The way I did the hibernation was as described in the posts; when the laptop came back on, I got the "exited with no result file" message. So hibernation didn't help - had the same results as standby. And, before trying suspending the project before standby/hibernation, I did try just standby/hibernation while the project was active. Again the same story. Reading various posts, I am getting the impression that the problem may be that when the computer is made inactive (standby or hibernation), the boinc manager stops heartbeating with the client task. When the laptop comes back again after (say) several hours, the boinc manager has missed several hours of heartbeating with the client, and terminates / restarts it. This was my impression but I may be wrong. So I'm looking for a way to deactivate the laptop without losing computation, if at all possible. Didactylos, your signature quote is mis-accented. It shouldn't be "Άχιληος", but "Αχιλήος". Many thanks! |

There are a few other accents missing, too. Unfortunately, the font on the forum doesn't support them all.
As far as I know, this hibernation issue only happens on laptops. Can you check the power settings and see if the hibernation mode you are using turns the computer fully off? Laptops usually have better standby support than desktops, but they may achieve that at the cost of other things. If that fails, please will you give us your complete laptop spec? We may have to pass the bug on to Berkeley. |

Yes, you are also missing the accent on "μήνιν", and nothing else. But, couldn't you copy/paste from my post? And shouldn't this be in a different thread altogether? :)
About different power modes on the T41: Hibernation saves ram to disk and then powers the laptop off completely so that no power is used. The laptop can stay hibernated for ever. Standby stops the processor/disk/display but does not save ram to disk, and switches the laptop to very low power consumption to maintain memory contents. The laptop can stay in this mode for a day or two before the battery runs out. Is that the info you were looking for? |

It's a different sort of accent. The correct form is μῆνιν ἄειδε θεὰ Πηληϊάδεω Ἀχιλῆος
- but that doesn't render so well. Besides, I took a gamble of hardly anyone reading ancient greek - and indeed, you're the first to spot my subterfuge. I was wondering whether your laptop supported a different hibernation mode, where it could perhaps boot more quickly. Laptops often use proprietary technology for this, instead of using the standard Windows behaviour you describe. Oh well, it was worth asking. |

Well I was taught this at high school
And you are correct about the accents - modern greek fonts usually support only one accent, it's been ages since I saw a circumflex on a computer!Anyway, thanks for the help. Hopefully a solution / workaround can be found to this problem! |

Heh. I was right. Your laptop does indeed ship with some weird IBM Power Management thingy. I have no idea whether your problem is caused in any way by this, but for what it's worth... you could always try switching this feature on/off.
Anyway, I looked up the other reported incident (misfiled in the UD forum) back in January and I'm sorry to say it was unresolved, despite the assistance of a WCG tech. It wouldn't hurt to run some memory and harddrive diagnostics. |
