i work at a college where im currently running about 80 installations until recently i was 192 in the world. now im 193 and falling, why? because i work with an arsehole Admin whos blocking Boinc in the college firewall. so now i need to proxy 80 odd machines around the firewall. is there a quick way to change boinc's proxy settings on multiple machines? i can role out registry tweaks or possibly file copies via our login script, we also have all our machines login into a windows domain server. just out of interest if you want to know his reasoning behind blocking Boinc, he said "i dont like any software i dont know running on the college network"

This is definitely not my area of skill but a thought to keep in mind as you look for a solution to this. What about setting just one machine to communicate "outside" your network and let the others get their work thru it? That might reduce the amount of work you have to do (hopefully) and would allow you to tell the Admin that any exposure would come thru that one machine and how you've done x, y and z to protect against that. Then, more importantly, you can work on "enlightening" this Admin on the good of the WCG and maybe even suggest the they look into becoming a Partner. If he can see how that would be such a great idea of his, he'll be much more supportive of your efforts
---------------------------------------- I'm sure someone will have an answer to your proxy question soon. Thanks for all the crunching you've done too! |

*examines typo* rule out or roll out? I'm going to guess the latter.
There are two easy ways to manage BOINC over a network. One is using BOINCView, the other is using an account manager such as BAM! Unfortunately, I have little experience with either. BOINC doesn't use the registry (BOINC Manager uses it for trivial things such as window position, but that's all). Your proxy settings are stored in client_state.xml. You can simply replace this file on all your machines, and job done. However, this will lose ALL work in progress. I don't think an account manager will allow you to do this. It's not listed as a feature. So, that leaves BOINCView. It's hard to set up (you will have to deploy a couple of config files to each computer, and allow RPC connections on port 31416). I honestly can't discover whether BOINCView will do what you need. However, once you have set up BOINCView, you will also be able to connect remotely using BOINC Manager. One by one still, but at least from the same desk :-S Ask if you need any further advice. And hopefully someone can confirm BOINCView's precise features. |

BOINCview will exactly do that, start/stop/examine/keep tabs....have a look around for posts on this forum with that word in it like http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8363#67145 and u find instructions for the 2 *.cfg files that require placement, 1 of them containing a password of choice, which has to be uniform and the other the exact name (better) or permanent IP address (no so good), of the computers u'r going to manage on the network. All computers must have RPC and a few ports enabled, in main 31416.
----------------------------------------Having worked in large corporation, your AA (Asset Administrator ;>) ) is completely right. Anything communicating would need approval and buy in, as what keithhenry proposes. ciao

As mentioned in another forum you MUST have written permission from the owner of the computer to install BOINC on it. If you do not have this to show, the admin is exactly right in blocking BOINC. You also may be subject to civil and criminal penalties.

thing is im a Computer Technician working in the same unit, and to be honest he's done this before when i was running Seti and UD agent. the trouble is if a computer hangs and they bring up taskmanager it shows these programs as using 100% of the cpu so they automatically assume thats what caused the problem
---------------------------------------- . by the way keithhenry how could i route all the trafic through one machine?[Edit 2 times, last edit by adam-k at Sep 17, 2006 7:49:31 AM] |

BOINC from version 5.6.0 has a throttle which u can set by an override file to a lower percent if that is what ticks your 'colleague' off.... global_prefs_overrride.xml. The parameter is <cpu_usage_limit>100</cpu_usage_limit>

BOINC from version 5.6.0... present version is 5.4, isnt it???? global_prefs_overrride.xml. The parameter is <cpu_usage_limit>100</cpu_usage_limit> ciao I have checked BOINC official site and forum at Berkeley and I couldnt find any indication about this cpu limit feature in present versions; they are guessing about future vers. Are you sure about this parameter? any link to check it? Regards. |

5.6 is currently in alpha. I believe Sek, always ahead of the curve, is helping to test it.
I'm not. I have something else to test, now :-D *raises a glass to the cutting edge* |

I'm actually now on 5.6.3....... and would i have dreamed it up, would i have typed it? Multiple links were provided on how to get 5.6.x.....but since u r a doubting Thomas, check out posts of Dagorath or LawrenceHardin.....it does pay to read the tips in SR 04-06 on how to search the forum and then find and read all the great information that's out here.
---------------------------------------- , the mentioned BOINCview tracks the latest official and development versions of the Agent and BOINC addons and missed a beat.......5.6.4......will be installed after next MSFT required boot....5.6x are the series that will produce the final.....few bugs are left.link: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.6.4_windows_intelx86.exe lets see how big my thumb is that produces the stories making them figments of my imagination ![]() PS, the mentioned parm i have is on 95..... like to keep a little bit for my self BEFORE the Agent sidesteps.
