Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

I am not sure what you mean by "weird power management thingy". If you mean the thing that makes the laptop suspend / hibernate / whatever when power is low / lost etc, then I'm not letting that do anything, since I am manually suspending or hibernating the thing before I move the laptop. So that's out, I guess....

Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

Been a while since I used a Thinkpad.

Standard Windows power management is under the Control Panel. Don't know where the IBM thing is, but it's probably available through the start menu.

And I have to go now, so I'll leave you in the capable hands of my colleagues.

Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

The control panel is where I went to enable hibernation. So I guess I am not using anything fancy.

Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

I think that what Didactylos is looking for is an IBM-Thinkpad specific control power management panel....also not seen the magic BIOS word, but guess you've looked there as well.

ciao

Added: Found a post on a German forum where its said it pretty much an event seen across all platforms but sporadic........2 things that changed for me recently were adding ram and upgrading to 5.6.x.......never looses a beat now.

on heartbeat, ...doubt it as I've had situations until recently where the front end lost contact with science part for the duration of the night...killed it, and science continuing running. Restart of BOINCmgr.exe would pick up at the point where the science had progressed. The Firewall was here the source of the trouble.

Basic Input/Output System.....it's that pre-check of hardware u should see directly after boot after power-up..... in there one can set power management features too......ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). Known to be troublesource at times.

Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

Hello everybody !
I'm "glad" to see somebody else has got exactly the same problem I described 2 or 3 times in these forums.
Fortunately, his English is far better than mine and he described things perfectly.
I must add that not only laptops are concerned... My desktop does the same.
I'm eagerly waiting for an official release of BOINC version 5.6.x to see if this shall (at last) solve my problem !

Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

duanra, the emphasis on 'somebody else' .... few have reported problems with true hibernation / resume. I referred to the German forum and it said 'rare' observation there too. If u post here the exact hardware/software spec/versions/SPs, Didactylos can combine the problem findings and carry it to BOINC developers.

The link below is truly the only hibernation related post lodged on the official BOINC forum. http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_text_sear...rnation&bodies=Search

It makes mention of power saving features.

May I remind you here that I do NOT have this problem with other BOINC projects (Rosetta@home and Einstein@home). So I'm not sure it comes from the BOINC client.

Hardware : ATI Mobility Radeon X700 XL ; monoprocessor ACPI PC ; Intel Pentium M Processor 1.73GHz ; 1024 Mb RAM
Software : Microsoft Windows XP SP2 ; BOINC 5.4.9

Re: Computation lost when standby or hibernating on laptop

The German forum i was quoting from is not WCG related, so it's neither / nor for sure.....try killing the ACPI, since u list it.....pentium M also rang a bell and yes "Other power saving methods include dynamically variable clock frequency and core voltage, allowing the Pentium M to throttle clock speed when the system is idle in order to conserve energy."
