Potential Link Between Household Cleaning Products And Breast Cancer Should Be Investigated Say Researchers

US researchers found that women who reported high use of cleaning products, air fresheners and insect repellents had a higher risk of breast cancer compared with women who reported using them sparingly: however they cautioned that because the study relied on women's recall of product use, and their beliefs about how such products might contribute to cancer development could have influenced their recall, it should not be taken as proof of a link, but sufficient reason to research it more thoroughly.

You can read about how Dr Julia Brody, from the Silent Spring Institute, whose headquarters are in Newton, Massachusetts, and colleagues arrived at these findings in a report that was published online in the journal Environmental Health on 20 July.

For the study, which Brody and colleagues believe to be the first to investigate cleaning products and breast cancer, they conducted telephone interviews with 787 women in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1988 and 1995 and 721 women picked at random for comparison.

Brody told the press they found that:

"Women who reported the highest combined cleaning product use had a doubled risk of breast cancer compared to those with the lowest reported use."

She said use of air fresheners and products to control mold and mildew were linked to increased risk.

In the telephone interviews the researchers asked the women about product use, their beliefs about the causes of breast cancer, and their established and suspected breast cancer risk factors.

As well as looking for any links between product use and breast cancer risk, the researchers evaluated potential recall bias by doing what they called a "stratified analysis". They did this in two ways:
1.In the first stratified analysis they looked at links between product use and breast cancer incidence arranged according to beliefs about whether chemicals and pollutants contribute to breast cancer.
2.In the second they looked at links between family history and breast cancer incidence and also arranged them according to beliefs about how much family history contributes to breast cancer.
The logic behind this was they thought since family history was less likely to be influenced by recall bias, any recall bias due to beliefs would stand out in comparison.

The results showed that:
•Risk of developing breast cancer was twice as high in the 25 per cent of women who reported the most combined cleaning product use compared to the 25 per cent who reported the least (they compared the uppermost "quartile" with the lowest: adjusted odds ratio OR was 2.1, with 95 per cent confidence interval CI ranging from 1.4 to 3.3).

•The result was similar for combined air freshener use (uppermost to lowest quartile comparison showed an adjusted OR = 1.9, with 95% CI ranging from 1.2 to 3.0).

•There was no such link with pesticide use.

•In the stratified analyses, the odds ratios for cleaning products linked to breast cancer risk were higher among participants who said they believed that pollutants contributed "a lot" to breast cancer, and tended towards null among participants who did not report such a belief.

•In comparison, the odds ratio for breast cancer and family history was also higher among women who believed that heredity contributed "a lot", and it was not so high among the rest (OR 2.6 versus 0.7 respectively: no overlap in the CIs).
The researchers concluded that these results suggest that cleaning product use contributes to increased breast cancer risk.

CytRx's Tamibarotene Eradicates Cancer in...Leukemia After Failure...

CytRx Corporation (NASDAQ: CYTR), a biopharmaceutical company specializing in oncology, today announced that a 44-year-old female patient with advanced acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) achieved molecular complete remission with no evidence of disease in the blood cells and/or bone marrow following treatment with CytRx's oncology drug candidate tamibarotene. The patient was treated in CytRx's Phase 2 STAR-1 registration trial, which is evaluating the efficacy and safety of orally available tamibarotene as a third-line treatment for APL. The patient report, "Molecular remission in advanced acute promyelocytic leukaemia after treatment with the oral synthetic retinoid Tamibarotene," (Francesco Lo-Coco, et. al.), was published in the July online issue of the peer-reviewed British Journal of Haematology with publication in the print edition expected later this year.....

From above link

This study aimed to find a way to eradicate prostate cancer stem cells. It follows an earlier report that demonstrated the effectiveness of gamma-tocotrienol in targeting the bulk of the prostate tumour mass. This latest finding highlights the considerable potential of gamma-tocotrienol as a natural remedy to prevent and treat prostate cancer.

This research study involves collaboration between scientists at Davos Life Science (Singapore) and researchers at Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre -- Queensland and The Hong Kong University. The findings were reported in the latest edition of the International Journal of Cancer (IJC).

The scientists found that low doses of gamma-tocotrienol cause apoptosis in the prostate cancer stem cells and suppress their colony formation capability. This results in a lower prostate cancer stem cell population (as defined by the protein markers CD133 and CD44). Further tests in mice models were conducted, where mice implanted with hormonal refractory prostate cancer cells were given gamma-tocotrienol orally. The results showed that gamma- tocotrienol not only reduced tumour size formed, but also decreased the incidence rate of tumour formation by 75%, as compared to the control group of mice, which had 100% tumour formation. These results strongly suggest that gamma-tocotrienol could be developed for prostate cancer prevention and treatment...

Researchers discover how key enzyme repairs sun-damaged DNA

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Researchers have long known that humans lack a key enzyme -- one possessed by most of the animal kingdom and even plants -- that reverses severe sun damage.
For the first time, researchers have witnessed how this enzyme works at the atomic level to repair sun-damaged DNA.
The discovery holds promise for future sunburn remedies and skin cancer prevention.
In the early online edition of the journal Nature, Ohio State University physicist and chemist Dongping Zhong and his colleagues describe how they were able to observe the enzyme, called photolyase, inject a single electron and proton into an injured strand of DNA. The two subatomic particles healed the damage in a few billionths of a second.....

NICE guideline set to transform cancer care for thousands of patients

From today (26 July), specialist cancer teams will be tasked with improving the care and treatment of patients whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body from an unknown primary location. The re-organisation of cancer services for this group of patients is one of a raft of measures being recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to tackle the current inequality in care these patients often receive compared with people who have a site-specific type of cancer such as breast, lung or prostate.....

Herpes virus successfully used to treat cancer patients

British doctors have used a genetically engineered herpes virus to successfully treat patients with head and neck cancer.
It was found to be more effective at killing tumours in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy than the two standard cancer treatments on their own.
Scientists modified the common virus so that it would multiply inside cancer cells but not healthy cells.....

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Evaluate Pancreatic Cancer

Monday, August 2, 2010
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (the disease commonly referred to as pancreatic cancer) carries the worst prognosis of any cancer.
As current treatments offer minimal benefit, entirely new approaches are needed. Given the success of local therapies, as opposed to intravenous systemic therapies, for liver diseases (such as hepatocellular carcinoma), it is thought that similar local therapies may benefit patients with pancreatic cancer. To develop such therapies, it would be useful to devise targets that are easy to obtain and can indicate the efficacy of these new therapies in models of pancreatic cancer.
This research, led by Dr. Robert Lewandowski and colleagues at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and recently published on July 14, 2010 in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, addresses this need. Using a rabbit model of pancreatic cancer that allows for arterial catheterization, the authors aimed to test the hypotheses that advanced functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be used to assess regional differences in tumor function in this model. It was found that the two types of functional MRI studied (diffusion-weighted MRI and transcatheter intraarterial perfusion MRI) could be used to differentiate living tumor cells from dead tumor cells and thus can be used to assess tumor viability....
