Cancer vaccine success
http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2009/11/cancer-vaccine-success/ Implant-based cancer vaccine is first to eliminate tumors in mice The new approach, pioneered by bioengineers and immunologists at Harvard University, uses plastic disks impregnated with tumor-specific antigens and implanted under the skin to reprogram the mammalian immune system to attack tumors. The journal article describes the use of such implants to eradicate melanoma tumors in mice. |

Discovery at JGH opens door to new treatments...e, brain and skin cancers
Researchers at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research of the Jewish General Hospital and McGill University in Montreal have discovered a previously unsuspected link between two different genetic pathways which suppress the growth of cancer tumours. This breakthrough, they say, could lead to new treatments for some of the deadliest and most intractable forms of cancer; including prostate cancer, brain cancer and melanoma. The scientists discovered a novel link between a tumour-suppressing gene known as the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and a protein called PKR, which is known to inhibit protein synthesis. The researchers discovered that when PTEN is mutated or absent, PKR loses its inhibitory ability, and protein synthesis within the affected cells runs wild........ |

Immune cells use bungee of death to kill dangerous cells, shows new research
http://www.biologynews.net/archives/2010/03/0...s_shows_new_research.html Today's study, which was funded by the Medical Research Council and the Association pour la recherche sur le cancer (ARC), shows that NK cells can keep hold of their target cells by snaring them with a bungee-like tube, called a membrane nanotube. The cells then either recoil the target cells back into direct contact to be killed, or kill them from a distance. |

A compound that potentially will be able to stop the spreading of cancers [metastasis]:
----------------------------------------Anti-Cancer Agent Stops Metastasis In Its Tracks http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/185482.php ... Dr. Huang and his colleagues reported another key finding in the same Nature paper -- on X-ray crystal structures of fascin and of the complex of fascin and macroketone. They demonstrated how macroketone blocks the activity of fascin. The images showed precisely how macroketone snugly nestles into a pocket of fascin affecting the way it regulates actin filament bundling. "The molecular snapshots provide an approach for rational drug design of other molecules inhibiting the function of fascin, the therapeutic target," says Dr. Huang. ...
