Needham Health Department urges you to eat your fruits and veggies (Eat Well, Be Fit)
----------------------------------------Nutrition is a hot topic. You want to make good food choices that will influence your health in a positive way, right? There is so much information “out there.” You hear: five fruits and vegetables a day, (5-9 per the National Cancer Institute), food guide pyramid, high fiber, low fat, good fat, bad fat, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants, whole grain, this diet, that diet, etc! They have more vitamins and minerals per calorie than any other food group. They have no fat or cholesterol, and are high in fiber. They contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that help protect you from various diseases. If you can only focus on one aspect of your diet, eating more fruits and vegetables will make a huge difference to your health. Make it easy for you and your family to eat them at every opportunity....- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Sep 6, 2010 8:26:43 PM] |

Multivitamin ineffective in colon cancer
Despite the general belief, a new study suggests that taking multivitamins regularly does not reduce the risk of death in patients suffering from colorectal cancer. Previous studies have reported a high mortality rate among postmenopausal women who carry extra weight before being diagnosed with colon cancer. Colon cancer sufferers, therefore, were urged to shed off pounds to live longer. "The exact mechanism of this effect is unknown, but abnormal glucose tolerance, high levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factor I, and leptin, and increased oxidative stress, typical for patients with abdominal obesity, are known to promote colon cancer progression and increased mortality of colon cancer patients," scientists said.... |
