Re: Old Systems = Space Heaters

I've started Spring Cleaning .....Tearing down one Laptop at a time for general cleaning ...clean all the Radiators ...lube the fans...reset the heatsinks with new "Arctic Silver ".....just general hardware maintenance;1 down 3 to go!!!

You're a brave man, Sport. I wouldn't attempt to open up either of my 17 inchers for fear of breaking something. I limit physical maintenance to blowing the dust out of the fans and grills with canned air. Have had an ancient Dell lappy apart but the case was already broken from a fall.

...the first time into each machine ...{they are all different ..yet basically the same}....was scary to say the least ....but I've had each machine down to the MB several times ...they are no more than a "High-Tech" erector set ...though there are certain rules/procedures that make life alot easier...a muffin pan to help keep track of which screws go where ...magnetized...and UNmagnitized screwdrivers from #000 to #1 phillips...sloted from 1/32---1/4... good lighting { with my eyes a magnifier ...preferrably lighted is a must }...a grounded bench....OH YEAH!!! privacy/ concentration is #1

Blowing out the radiators sounds like a good idea ...but in my experience you are blowing all the 'gunk' back into the machine where it can

1.)accumulate on or around other components
2.)simply get blown back into the radiator by the cooling fans
3.) worst case scenerio ...{ I've had this happen} bind up the fans where you have NO air flow ...a VERY bad thing !!!

I find it to my benefit to pull the Keyboard access panel and the keyboard { usually this is all that's needed to acess the cooling system }...remove the heatsink/fan(s)...remove the fans ...clean the copper radiators (acetone or naptha{lighter fluid} works well)...use a toothepick to drop a couple drops of WD-40 into the fan motors....reassmble ..after cleaning the heatsink and CPU with Qtips and alcohol and applying a fresh application of "Artic Silver5"...this entire procedure can be done in a couple of hours easily if you are familiar with your machine

Important Edit:
should anyone decide to dive into their lappie ...the above info is VERY basic in it's text ....one thing that is very important is the disassembly/reassembly of the heatsink from/onto the CPU ...there is a very important assembly sequence for torquing the screws that hold the heatsink to the MB/CPU...generally the screws are #ed this sequence is different for each machine ...failure to follow these sequences can result in a broken{literally} CPU..... I cann't be resonsible for you turning you computer into a high dollar paper weight!!!!!
