Re: Are points being awarded fairly?

Hi Sekerob I've had a look at the coments and I can't see it

The only time I have seen the benchmark run is when BOINC is first installed or you request it to run or you reboot your PC. Mine takes exactly one minute to complete

The benchmark runs at the end of every work unit with UD so you are still ahead of the game with BOINC

It would be good to know if the work unit points for each result are averaged or the middle one chosen. This eliminates any cheating by using optimised clients etc as the points are evened out for each WU

btw could someone cut me free - the umbilical is working from home, desk based Telephony support, emails and word docs. This is light relief for me and gives a different perspective on the world contributing to the good

Re: Are points being awarded fairly?

Dave,with respect to the benchmark running on BOINC, I want to say that I've seen it running in the wee hours of the night - shows up in the Messages tab. What I haven't done is to check each morning and confirm that it ran earlier. What has brought that to my notice is that if you're crunching a WU with another preempted before it, after the benchmark runs, it will be the preempted one that starts running. I'll have to try to check my Messages tab for the next few mornings and see if the benchmarks have run overnight.

Re: Are points being awarded fairly?

Morning Keith

Thanks for the feedback. Is that how the pre-empt is kicked off in the first place? I have just one PC on 5.4.9 and it is only this one that has had the pre-empt The older 5.2.13's don't do this.

Not happy with 5.4.9 it's not downloading a full quota of WU's either and this morning it had completed both WU's it had downloaded and it hadn't bothered to go get more. roll on 5.4.10

The pre-empt is caused by the change in the length of run time allowed from 3 weeks to 1 week as knreed tunes the efficiency of the BOINC process. The new WU's are set to 7days whereas the older WU's are set to 3 weeks. This change is done on the batches of WU's before they are fed into the sausage machine and there are still some older batches out in the wild to be processed. This explains the confusing behaviour at the mo.

It depends maybe whether you've installed the basic or advanced GUI...., i cant remember if such an option existed, but anyway, The Benchmark test is on the "Advanced" menu option, not on any tab. If you select Help, Benchmark Manager, there is a section:
Advanced
Options: opens a dialog allowing you to select your preferred language, how often you wish to be reminded of the need to connect to the project servers (for dial-up users), etc.
If you connect to the web through an HTTP or SOCKS proxy, use this dialog to enter its address and port.
Windows only: use this dialog to tell BOINC your method of connecting to the Internet.
Select Computer: Allows you to control BOINC on a different computer
Run Benchmarks: run benchmark functions, which measure the speed of your processor. BOINC does this automatically, but you can repeat it whenever you want. The results are shown in the Messages tab.
Retry Communications: retry any deferred communications.

On Other comments, No panic guys, once all the 3 week WU's have been send off and only 1 week deadline's are left, 5.4.9 pulls your full cache needs over. It started giving the 1 week priority over the 3 weeks, so temporarily put them on hold. BOINC 5.4.9 is really good, and stat tab graphs many times better than the once in 5.2.13....dont know 5.4.1 t.b.o.

Oddly astound noone sees it confused

Oh and somehow, the world of coincidences, has caused my results to very often be the 'middleman' of the quorum. Ergo, most often i get what BOINC claimed. The Benchmark squeezing has thus helped to get 1 or 2 points more, the low submittor is happier and the hi submittor is 'less' less happy..... adds up to 3 full glasses to toast dancing It's just a game we do it for crunching an squashing deceases smile

PS how do i become a 'Senior Community Advisory Cruncher'....just kidding...its TGIF.

......Have a nice day biggrin

Re: Are points being awarded fairly?

Dave, here's what I have from this morning:

6/2/2006 3:08:17 AM||Suspending computation and network activity - running CPU benchmarks
6/2/2006 3:08:17 AM|World Community Grid|Pausing result faah0518_d151cb121_x1hpv_02_2 (removed from memory)
6/2/2006 3:08:18 AM||request_reschedule_cpus: process exited
6/2/2006 3:08:19 AM||Running CPU benchmarks
6/2/2006 3:09:19 AM||Benchmark results:
6/2/2006 3:09:19 AM|| Number of CPUs: 1
6/2/2006 3:09:19 AM|| 1320 double precision MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
6/2/2006 3:09:19 AM|| 2733 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
6/2/2006 3:09:19 AM||Finished CPU benchmarks
6/2/2006 3:09:20 AM||Resuming computation and network activity
6/2/2006 3:09:20 AM||request_reschedule_cpus: Resuming activities
6/2/2006 3:09:20 AM|World Community Grid|Restarting result faah0518_d151cb121_x1hpv_02_2 using faah version 509

I'm still 5.2.13 myself. My point was that it won't necessarily restart the same WU you were on. Easiest way to see that is to have one WU preempted (suspend and resume it) and one after it running when the benchmarks run.
