Important because TB is probably the biggest single killer disease in human history. It is also probably the main cause of death of the HIV positive globally. Its elimination would be a huge benefit to all humanity.

"Public release date: 14-Oct-2010 OCTANE study influences revision of WHO guidelines for treating some HIV-infected women Findings from a study, which appear in the Oct. 14, 2010 New England Journal of Medicine, helped influence the World Health Organization (WHO) to change its guidelines this year for the treatment of HIV-infected women who receive a single dose of the antiretroviral drug nevirapine to prevent HIV transmission to their babies. The study demonstrated that the single dose of nevirapine used to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV can hamper the drug's effectiveness if it is also used later as part of a regimen to treat these same individuals..." |

Not seen many new recent articles. Hope these posts encourage others.
http://www.nature.com/news/2010/101025/full/n...ticles+published+today%29 "25 October 2010 Ancient chimp virus brought 'back to life' A retrovirus that has lain dormant in chimpanzees and their ancestors for at least one million years is surrendering its secrets. A team of scientists has resurrected a key portion of the virus and determined how it infects cells. Ordinarily, endogenous viruses — ancient viruses that were long ago engulfed into their host's genome — are studied on the basis of their DNA sequence alone. Increasingly, however, researchers are bringing such viruses 'back to life' and putting them through the same laboratory tests that contemporary viruses are subject to. "Our major motivation for getting involved in this is to try and explain how our host defences evolved," says Paul Bieniasz, a virologist at the Rockefeller University in New York, whose team identified the molecular receptor that was presumably used by the ancient chimpanzee virus1. Mimicking such defences could help to combat modern viruses, such as HIV, he says..." |
