Clinical Trial Results Demonstrate Promise For First Non-Suppressive HIV Drug
Recently published Phase 2a clinical trial results (accessible by clicking here) show that the frequency of specific, drug-induced mutations in the HIV genome can be significantly increased by administering KP-1461, a drug being developed by Koronis Pharmaceuticals based on its novel Viral Decay Acceleration (VDA) drug mechanism. Koronis is planning a follow-on Phase 2 trial to determine the treatment duration required to achieve a clinically meaningful decrease in a patient's viral load..."

Re: Interesting news articles about AIDS

Dear Michael2901, Dan60, Faust26, and Papa3,

Thank you very much for sharing these great news releases!!! I'm going to download and start studying the research articles they refer to now. They could definitely help us pick some new targets in the future, and the one about lymphoma might add some extra significance to our HIV integrase experiments on FAAH. If raltegravir does contribute to the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, then we definitely need to find some new classes of HIV integrase inhibitors that don't cause toxicity.

Thanks again for your help,
Dr. Alex Perryman

Thank you, Dr. Perryman.

Research suggests HIV causes rapid aging in key infection-fighting cells

"... they found in individuals infected with HIV-1, these cells underwent unexpectedly rapid aging — the equivalent of 20 to 30 years of aging within three years of infection."

New anti-HIV gene therapy makes T-cells resistant to HIV infection

Re: Interesting news articles about AIDS

The appended article is meant to complement Dan60's recent post above "Research suggests HIV causes rapid aging in key infection-fighting cells".

It was published in 2008 which shows that researchers may have suspected this effect of HIV for some time and were looking into natural substances (that they could perhaps enhance in the laboratory?) to help counter this effect.

Fight Against HIV - TAT2, Used In Chinese Herbal Therapy, Prolongs Killer T-cells' Ability To Divide
Like other kinds of cells, immune cells lose the ability to divide as they age because a part of their chromosomes known as a telomere becomes progressively shorter with cell division. As a result, the cell changes in many ways, and its disease fighting ability is compromised.

But a new UCLA AIDS Institute study has found that a chemical from the Astragalus root, frequently used in Chinese herbal therapy, can prevent or slow this progressive telomere shortening, which could make it a key weapon in the fight against HIV..."

I'd rather think such drugs could be enhanced. Thanks Michael for the complement.
