I have rented the web space www.WORLDBREWERS.INFO for the team's use.
Once the web host gets their accounting straight, we will be able to put a basic 5 page website up using automatic formatting tools. There is also an email (join@worldbrewers.info) which will be collected and read for feedback and questions. I would like suggestions for the web site. It won't be perfect the first time through, it just needs to be a point we can use for recruitment in addition to Bill's homepage. cheers FB |

Now if anybody knows a good way to make a Dell Poweredge 1750 server a bit quieter.... then I could do some more myself. 2 x 3Ghz processors, curently sitting redundant at my place :( Which fan is making the most noise? Is it a rack mount with those blower fans for the processors? cheers FB Yes it is..... and I have just done some more investigation into the processors and they are Intel Xeon, 3.06 Ghz Dual core. Which makes four (not two) fairly quick processes whcih could be running. It is only a 1U rack mount unit, but there are iirc three or four fans in there, and they make a fair bit of noise. I only bought the server because it was cheap ($440AU about $330US at todays exchange rate) and really have no purpose for it other than to act as a cruncher! I could probably sell it for at least double what I paid - but I don't think I could buy anything like the same total processor speed for even that amount of money. dreamboat |

It is only a 1U rack mount unit, but there are iirc three or four fans in there, and they make a fair bit of noise. You have two basic choices: run the unit with the lid on or off. If you take the lid off, you can do away with the blowers and get normal cooling fans over the heat dissipators (there are fan arrays specifically for rack units as well, but they run $100-$200); the downside being that it's exposed to dust and dropped soda. To run with the lid on, you can get a different cooling system. These guys here at this site do nothing but make quiet systems, they probably have at least one better blower and/or cooler: http://www.silentpcreview.com/section11.html I only bought the server because it was cheap ($440AU about $330US at todays exchange rate) and really have no purpose for it other than to act as a cruncher! Definitely an excellent deal and a lot of power, it would be hard to replace without spending a bundle. It is a shame it can't be crunching. cheers FB |

The WORLDBREWERS team homepage is taking shape
WWW.WORLDBREWERS.INFO I first want to apologize for the banner image - it came with the template. I'm looking for a better image to put there, if anyone has some suggestions, please let me know. Also, the page is incomplete (the "Read more..." linked pages aren't made yet) and there are a couple of formatting glitches I need to work out involving the WCG logo on the About WCG page. Feel free to jump in with material, comments, suggestions, images, and anything else that'll make the page better! We have a total of 5 pages to work with, two are started (home and About WCG). Two are yet to be made (about Projects and about Homebrewers) and one is undefined. Cheers FB |

I loaded the BOINC client onto the dell 1750 over the weekend, and got a bit of run-time out of it. It is certainly a good machine in terms of performance, but with four threads running continuously, the fans would occasionally kick up to full speed which was pretty awful.
I am going to try to track down some good temperature monitoring software for the CPU's and collect some baseline data (maybe I can get temps from other parts of the system also), then I will try out some alternatives to the current fan system. I have the computer mounted under a bench, so I don't have to worry about stuff getting dropped into it, and I may be able to make a "tunnel" through which to blow air across the whole system with quieter fans. I also have in the back of my mind that we are in the middle of winter at the moment, with my ambient room temperature in that room of 15-19C (good ale brewing temps :) ), but in summer, that will increase to around 30C, maybe dropping a few degrees at night. Hi Homebrewers! That websites taking shape nicely Fred! ![]() Keep up the good work. ![]() Hi V_R, and thanks! I'm glad that these new WUs are online for Help Defeat Cancer; they really give me some mainstream appeal and solid high profile backers to push off from in opening communication with potential members. Hi Ady, hi team! Bump to Markheth for the 475,000+ points - and Dreamboat in hot pursuit with a hot new machine to boot, this should be an interesting race to the big Five-Oh (-oh-oh-oh-OOOH ![]() ![]() Way to go Dave, with over 1,000 results returned ![]() Dowswea, Jay Peek, ScreaminZ, Mahalo3 nz.craig, and Andrew Weatherstone, I'm glad that you're choosing to motor along with us still, all of you over that 6-figure hump nicely and still crunching ![]() ![]() BHevey, about to crunch his first 10k with Homebrewers, may your brews never fail. Hi Fred (and the rest of the team!),
----------------------------------------Finally had a chance to post since I got back on the weekend and now I have a out and back trip to scenic North Dakota tomorrow. The new web site looks real nice, thanks for all of the work! Based on the note I got from Bill I think you could request a team leader change at any time you are ready, I'm sure he would not object. Then you could point to the new home page from the main team page at WCG. Just kegged a Bass Ale Clone I made for my wife (I like it too!). Tastes great, now I just have to see how it is when carbonated. I also added some clarifier to two meads that I made late last fall, they are almost ready to bottle. Heading to a Mead Day event on Saturday so I probably won't have time to post again until Sunday. Dave |

That's delicious beer, one of my favorites with a sandwich or some cold chicken or roast beef. Did you know that the extra hops in an IPA (that's India Pale Ale) were added by the original British brewers for their colony in India to keep the beer from spoiling in the hot temperatures? I always find the history of something fascinating, especially for something done to fix one region's problems turning into a world favorite just because it's so good. Have fun at the Mead Day!
