No work again. Is WCG dying? Is it worth it anymore? I might find a new project to support. Good Questions. I use Einstein and Milkyway as backups.

No work again. Is WCG dying? Is it worth it anymore? I might find a new project to support. Valid question on the first part, and as has been noted many times, WCG needs financial support. Those that can and have the ability to do so, and believe the research work is worth supporting should do so. Those that are running WCG on otherwise unused machines should consider saving the money spent on electricity, and instead donate some it to the project. That's what they need most right now. As already stated, you can also run multiple projects in BOINC or set a backup project. For a backup project, set the priority to zero, and work will be pulled from that project when WCG is not downloading work-units.

- Paul makes a great point. - donate to WCG if you can. The donation page now lists a second method to donate through a charity.
- We know that WCG is moving hardware from Graham to Nibi. This is still a process, and we don't know much about the details. There is a filesystem problem with Graham right now, but I don't know if this is related to our current issue or not. -Backup projects are always a good idea. ALL projects have down time, so it is always good to have a backup project. The WUProp link in my first post lets you see a list of some active Boinc projects. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I get a bit disillusioned by the lack of communication though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I get a bit disillusioned by the lack of communication though. I've been involved in Distributed Computing before WCG or BOINC existed. The pinnacle of distributed computing as a whole was WCG when it was run by IBM. They were putting in the resources and personnel to make that happen. You're not alone, we all miss those days. To replicate that will either require a big money donor, or crowed-sourced from many small donors. With any of these projects, the "is worth it" decision making should be based on the research. While points, badges, and rankings are nice, I treat this as a charitable donation, (with the cost calculated) no different than any of my other charitable efforts. This is the same lab which ran the cancer research projects when WCG was under IBM.

or crowed-sourced from many small donors. I am all for the small(or large) donations but somehow trying to get them from even the smartest birds may be a long shot. Cheers

Good news. Dylan the tech has said in another thread

MCM is flowing well, but isn't clearing from the results list
ARP is not flowing, but there are a small amount of resends still bouncing around. Dylan the tech has set up a possible new forum.https://discourse.worldcommunitygrid.org/latest |
