It's high time for the team, to give us an update on when we can expect the promised ARP restart, and also when the "new" project that also was promised will start. An update on when we will see new OPNG tasks, would also be appreciated.

I don't think that they have a new communications intern.

Unixchick,
Can we have an introduction from the new communication intern?? Regarding a possible new intern -- I think Grumpy Swede is right...If you are referring to posts by user savas , that user posted a few times during the transition from IBM to Krembil, and has also posted a few messages this September, including an explanation of why some of the user profile stuff wsan't updating in a timely fashion :-) so I suspect that user is part of the actual tech team... MJH333 responded to one of the recent posts to suggest a change of Forum description to something other than Cruncher -- it would certainly clear things up! Cheers - Al. |

Another month, another brief "report card" from the viewpoint of a user...
Regarding service reliability, there has been one obvious problem with the non-BOINC services, from about 01:50 to 17:20 UTC on 2024-09-11. (BOINC service seemed to be functional throughout.) As ever, there was no official comment on what happened. Regarding other aspects of the service: as far as I can tell, there weren't any times when one of the parts of the validation to purging chain took a day off :-) Around the 21st and 22nd, it looked as if we might be going to see the return of the Waiting to be sent issue - the numbers relating to work units I returned results for on those days were as follows (based on my [then] typical processing of around 500 tasks a day): 40 delayed retries (0 UA, 39 NR/NSD, 1 other) were set up on 2024-09-21: The reasons for a retry being needed?: UA = User Aborted, NR/NSD = No Reply or Not started by deadline, Other = anything else! And, as suggested by the relatively short delays, I processed some delayed retries on the 22nd and 23rd... Results returned on 2024-09-22: Much relief that it didn't get any worse :-) And finally... I have not seen any official news about a replacement for TigerLily :-( -- however, as mentioned a couple of times up-thread, someone does appear to be reading [some of] the forums now and then :-) Here's hoping for the following in the next month:

The silence from the team, and the lack of a new communications intern, gives me a strange feeling about the future of WCG.
I hope I'm wrong though..... |

The silence from the team, and the lack of a new communications intern, gives me a strange feeling about the future of WCG. I think there may have been some [unannounced] changes in the technical team (and/or the MCM team) in the last year or so; if that has resulted in a reduction in the size of the tech team or in a new person still learning the ropes, less feedback isn't exactly surprising (even with the fairly low baseline!)I hope I'm wrong though..... I find it interesting that a project like Einstein@Home can have staffing issues and their user community doesn't get fractious about it, even when it impinges on quality of service! -- this is probably because when someone eventually responds they point out that someone has been (or is) indisposed, so the users know what's going on :-) Cheers - Al. I don't think it would take much communication to make me personally happy. Once a month take 15 minutes to just type out an honest update. Don't put any dates on it, just say. We are still working on ARP but we have hit some coding issues that we continue to work on. We are looking at new projects and we will announce them when we are closer to having them available. Or maybe we don't have the funding we need to do all the things we want, so we are just going to run MCM only until we get more funding. We don't have money to hire a communications intern, so you will only be getting low detail updates once a month.
I don't feel like they need my computer for MCM, so I'm waiting around for other projects. It's too hot to run my computer right now, so that is ok. |
