Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I just saw the "there is enough WUs going out" post. Let's remember not to get mad at TigerLily as she is just the poster. I'm very disappointed in the tech team, as they still don't understand the system. I know that porting this system gave it some quirks. It is always hard to modify someone else's code and it isn't standard Boinc code. But I'm so glad that we (the users) made this thread to chat about how to view the system without a status page.

TigerLily - the techs didn't give you good information. MCM is not going out anywhere close to historic levels. SCC isn't going out at all, and OPNG has never gone out at a level that is sufficient. Even with all the people who left WCG, it still provides more processing power than can be used.

If WCG wants to bring more people to the joy of distributed computing, then more WUs need to go out. Boinc projects have always had a tightrope to walk on getting the data processed, and also use the project as a PR opportunity. How do you keep the many machine power users happy as well as the one slow machine users.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I agree with the core messages of Unixchick's post above (including the "tightrope") -- patently incorrect information is arguably worse than no information at all, and one or two responses in threads elsewhere have been a bit like shooting the messenger :-(

We must also remember that of all the projects at WCG at present, the only one where WCG has true control over work availability is MCM1 (for obvious reasons!) -- it's unfortunate, but if the scientists don't provide data (SCC1) or provide it in dribbles (OPNG?) there's not a lot that WCG can do about it...

And as for ARP1 -- I really think it's time for a proper "here is the actual state of play" posting from WCG, including something about why the restart has, it seems, been "real soon now" for too long :-)

In the meantime, it's back to "hurry up and wait" mode...

Cheers - Al.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

At least the backlog of October, November, December, January, February, and March MCM1 have been purged. Woohoo.

But yes, still hungry for more work.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Another morning getting up to no tasks running.
Odd because there are ENOUGH WUs for now.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I am getting a few occasionally, but not whenever I report. Supply is obviously intermittent but enough for me.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I'm getting a better flow of MCMs today. I'm running without a queue so I can see how responsive the system is. I'm getting a replacement WU (for a reported one) within 10 minutes of reporting. This seems good to me. I'm sure if I ran with a small queue I wouldn't have any idle time. The numbers in the first post aren't as large as historically, so I'm glad for everyone's feedback.

edit to add: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewP...&numRecordsPerPage=30 looking at the stats it looks like they are upping the number of MCMs going out.

I agree they are upping the number of work units available, but they are still operating below historical levels. This may be by design to not overly stress the system or they may have another reason. It is still less than the available processing power can handle.

Cheers

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I have zero moral issues with setting a 1 day queue, since I run all my machines 24/7 anyway and there's never an issue with late or not replying. In times like these, I bump it up to 2 days or so, and it somewhat helps. It's less babysitting involved other than any OCD tendencies to check out of curiosity.

What's cool is that it helps with work fetch too -- each WU uploaded gets reported immediately when the queue isn't full, so my 4-core machines are asking at least 4 times every 1.5 hours for work x 2 after the 2 minute delay.

Highly recommend a 1-2 day queue if you crunch 24/7, and I don't think it hurts WCG in any way since work download and upload are still normal frequency..

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Definitely no guilt for having a reasonably sized queue. The queue function is there for this reason. I notice that the MCM WUs now have a 5 day return time. So no one should have a queue longer than 5 days. Is this a change for MCM, or was I not paying attention before?

It's still six days, Unixchick, in my experience. My March has 31 days, don't know about yours. laughing
