Workunit FAQ (Updated)

Hi everyone, we've seen some questions repeated among multiple volunteers that we'd like to address quickly.

For volunteers that did not receive any new workunits to crunch, we'd like to emphasize that only a limited amount of workunits were sent out as part of a testing phase. For those of you who were confused by our previous messaging, we're sorry.

About the URL change, please disregard this notice and do not update the URL, as the existing URL is correct.

Finally, the common error that stats "Server is out of disk space", all WCG servers have an excess of free space, as does the shared filesystem. We are investigating the cause of this error and will update when it is resolved. The bug reports are a great help and very much appreciated.

EDIT: We have identified the cause of the intermittent error about a full disk on the upload server that was preventing users from uploading their results. The interface on which the shared filesystem is mounted stopped responding on one of the upload servers and the exact cause is still under investigation. For the time being, the virtual machine that is exhibiting this behavior has been removed from the balancer group for uploads and downloads of workunits. We will continue to monitor the situation. A sincere thank you to all volunteers who reported this issue.

If you have any other questions, please leave them below and we will answer them as soon as we can.

- WCG Team

Re: Workunit FAQ

Thanks for this thread, Cyclops

This one is important and has been raised before in several threads:

One thing you should fix as soon as possible, is that changes in "Device Profiles", on the website does no longer carry over into BOINC. So, if you change anything there, for exampel which profile your computer should belong to, that does not change in BOINC. If you change anything in the profile itself, for example if you want to crunch on your GPU with a particular profile, or change "Project Limits", or which projects you want to run with that profile, nothing of that does carry over to BOINC..

To be clear if someone wonders, I do not talk about settings that could be overridden by local preferences, "Device Profile" settings on the website is just clearly not carried over to BOINC.

Edit: This issue too. Since "Current streak" was updated yesterday, at least for those who managed to get any work, will it reset to Zero, if we can't get any work at all today? If so, you'd better freeze "Current streak", until a reliable flow of work is available. It's not the users fault, if his/her computer is online, asking for work, and can't get any. So the individual users "Current Streak" should not be reset to Zero, in those circumstances.

Re: Workunit FAQ

I was checking my Device profiles and noticed that 'Default' had Do work on battery set to ON.

I'm about 99% sure that was set to OFF before the transition and I just wanted to throw that out there and see if anybody else noticed that and have the admins double check that's not the Default setting (should be defaulted to OFF).

Also, there use to be a link to the device requirements that told you what resources your system needed to run a specific project. I didn't see that on the new device profile pages. (I don't need the link though, I know where it is currently)
