Re: Workunits are being sent out

WCG is doing a good job of halting work from other projects. I have over 20 WU's results waiting for upload. For some reason it using up RAM which is preventing me getting work from Rosetta@home...I guess you have too much to worry about to give a F**K

I have heard that too, and it seems to be true. But I get other work even if I do not suspennd WCG. Certainly, setting No New Tasks is enough. I suspect it has a lot to do with the priorities set in the Boinc Client that affects this.

Re: Workunits are being sent out

I've contributed over a million work units, but Kimball's decision to slow walk this and take weekends off has offset my contribution with an even larger negative impact.

At this point the team operating WCG should seek another location for its permanent home. Folding@Home introduces new CPU projects every few weeks, whereas the WCG has no future projects planned. They used to run on BOINC - perhaps they'd be capable of running the World Community Grid.

From post 682683:
As the projects move on to the new phase, and as we solve our back-end aches, there would be more science to report on. Also, once we resolve our technical challenges, we have plans for new projects and new initiatives. The balance between number of projects and number of volunteers/devices is a tricky one – and there are also (multiple good) reasons why only about 1-2 new projects were onboarded annually over the history of WCG.

Re: Workunits are being sent out

They used to run on BOINC

While Folding@home did have a small BOINC test-project, they never made it out of closed testing back in ... hmm, if time-stamp is anything to go by my last successful connection was 24.12.2005. Expecting whoever is currently running Folding@home knows anything about running a BOINC project is wherefore highly unlikely.
Folding@Home introduces new CPU projects every few weeks
A Folding@home "project" and a WCG "project" is not the same, since while example WCG's MCM1 "project" have over time work for many different types of cancers, a Folding@home "project" would only include work for a single type of cancer and you can actually have multiple Folding@home "projects" with the same multiple molecules.

Example, now granted this is Covid, but if not mis-read something Folding@home project 16519 and 16521 seems to work on exactly the same multi-molecules.

Meaning, while WCG would lump all of this work into the single Covid "project", Folding@home splits this into at least 37 separate Covid "projects".

Re: Workunits are being sent out

I wish Krembil provided Jurisica Lab with more dedicated IT resources (hardware + people).

I think most of us wish that. However there is probably a lack of money/resources to accomplish this.

Cheers

I think Krembil's IT support is via SHARCNET CA who only provide business day support (no weekends or evenings). Their FAQ says:
How long should I expect to wait for support?

Unfortunately Compute Canada/SHARCNET does not have adequate funding to provide support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. User support and system monitoring is limited to regular business hours: there is no official support on weekends or holidays, or outside 9:00 - 17:00 EST .

Please note that this includes monitoring of our systems and operations, so typically when there are problems overnight or on weekends/holidays system notices will not be posted until the next business day.

I think you might want to scratch that "I think". biggrin
From post 678894:
As described earlier, WCG had transitioned from using IBM cloud infrastructure to our physical servers hosted at the University of Waterloo and supported by the Sharcnet HPC facility.

and from post 679252:
We are working together with SHARCNET (an HPC site where WCG servers and storage reside)
