Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

So..... Do you need to reserve 1 thread for each task run?
The processor must keep up with feeding the video card. The leftovers can be used painlessly for CPU-only jobs.

I have 4-core i5 with HD4600 and an R7 260x.
<app_config>
<app>
<name>opng</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.33</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.49</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>
.49 * 6 ( 3 GPU-tasks for AMD and 3 GPU-tasks for Intel ) = 2.94 - i.e., 4 - 2 = 2 cores can do CPU-only tasks.
.5 * 6 = 3 - i.e., 4 - 3 = 1 core can do CPU-only task.

It depends on your hardware.

Just a note about this for machines that only have an integrated GPU(no discrete GPU). I did somewhat extensive testing and data collection during the beta. The short version is that for the intel integrated GPU, the computer did more total science by not running CPU units. This is because the iGPU is way faster at opng calculations than the cpu cores are, and running CPU units slows down the iGPU unit. So the jobs/hour of the iGPU + CPU was significantly less than the jobs/hour of running just the iGPU.
That was with an 8th gen i7 with an intel UHD 620.
YMMV
Cheers smile

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

Thanks Uplinger for all you hard work!
I have no real problems with up/download and getting work constantly.

Just mentioned that my GPU cruncher with 1660 Super, 280X and A12-9800 APU gets up to 150 NV wu's and almost non for the ATI/AMD. That's no real problem because I can handle this with a second Boinc instance.

The kitties are just pawing along with their bowl full of kibbles, thanks to uplinger's work getting the servers running like a fine tuned watch.
Meow, uplinger!

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

@True54Blue - Don't you find your GPU maxing out running less than 16 GPU tasks at a time?
I'm crunching 4 at a time and find my gpu under 100% load for a lot of the time. I'll try a step up to 8 tasks.

Question - Is there a hand off at the end back to the CPU? I think I've seen this. I had a task with 1min to go and there was virtually nothing on the cpu.

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

Try the newest World Community Grid Client 7.14.3.

Newest? BOINC is at version 7.16.11. Time to update it seems.

Re: OpenPandemics - GPU Stress Test

Tell you what though!!! I absolutely LOVE how these work units sip on the electricity.

My GPU (Radeon VII) is running flat out and it's only pulling 60W. I don't need to undervolt here. lol.

That's a win for me and my families power bill.
Well done on that aspect.

I like that too, during the summer. But it means that the GPU is running at less than 100% capacity. Uplinger will be optimizing the work units later, which will increase the GPU usage. But that also means that it will draw more power, and run hotter. You don't get work done without expending energy, which means more power.

I would like that next winter anyway.

I know this was directed at True54Blue. However, I would like to point something out. Max load does not equal the average load. With 1 work unit the max load is 100% on my rtx 2060m. However, the average load is pretty low. The average load increases with more simultaneous work units. It seems to peak at 10 for my rtx 2060m.

This is illustrated by your other post. If a 300W tdp card is drawing 60W, it is nowhere close to 100% average load.
My GPU (Radeon VII) is running flat out and it's only pulling 60W. I don't need to undervolt here. lol.

All this to say that you probably would get more science done by increasing the number of simultaneous work units.

Note: Radeon VII tdp taken from AMD . Techpowerup says 295W.
