Please try to keep comments positive and helpful towards everyone in the forums and not combative. We try to make things run as best as they can, but we do not have unlimited resources. Thanks, -Uplinger

In order not to overtax my SSD, I decided to do what I had done already a few years ago when I participated in a project with enormous amounts of data written to the SSD: I shifted BOINC over to an external USB3-disk. And that worked out very well (although I had to accept the lower speed, of course)
However, this time it did not seem to work. The BOINC manager gets disconnected every few minutes and needs to get reconnected manually. So I must consider this approach as failed, as sorry as I am for my SSD. |

I had arranged to be out for a couple of hours, and just got back - to find I'd missed the fun of the network outage. But my hosts didn't: a couple were down to the last knockings, because the BOINC client moves quickly into multi-hour backoffs more appropriate to the dial-up era. That's something that projects (and BOINC) should take into consideration when designing server and network resiliency: even a couple of minutes of server downtime triggers an automatic 1 hour update moratorium, which on a low-latency test like this can be significant.

For you guys who are worried about all the SSD writes, check out Goben's post here on how to use a ramdisk instead: https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg...ad,43399_offset,10#657380

So..... Do you need to reserve 1 thread for each task run? I'm still a little confused by how much I should be reserving.
----------------------------------------Actually.... it looks as though if I increase the amount of GPU running concurrently, BOINC automatically pauses the CPU work. Is that what others see? or am I one of the few who's running both cpu & gpu work? I'm running both CPU & GPU work fwiw. ![]() ![]() |

Well, the kitties run both, but it's just 3 CPU tasks and 1 GPU task. Nothing to compare with the level that you are running at.
----------------------------------------The kitties only have a rather old computer. But they like to chip in with what they have. Meow ![]() |
