The 'correct syntax' is documented in Client Configuration (project settings), which is part of the User Manual. Thanks, but I only want it of the NVIDIA GPUs, so this should use the plan_class directive to separate the NVIDIA from Intel HD graphics, so what is the plan_class for these jobs for the Nvidia? An example would be nice.<plan_class>opencl_nvidia_102</plan_class> <plan_class>opencl_intel_gpu_102</plan_class> [Edit 1 times, last edit by Richard Haselgrove at Apr 5, 2021 9:16:19 AM] |

An example would be nice. For the current (version 7.28) Beta29 application under Windows, they are<plan_class>opencl_nvidia_102</plan_class> <plan_class>opencl_intel_gpu_102</plan_class> Thank you Richard! You just saved me from trying having 2 instances of boinc to manage the different video cards separately. Now all I have to do is setup a ram disk since the way these work units are setup thrash the ssd a ridiculous amount. |

If you have enough RAM, then a RAMDisk should save the SSD from checkpoints. I run ImDisk which is free and it has worked flawlessly as long as you don't choose A: or B: as you device letter for the RAMDisk Drive in Windows. You mean not assigning a drive letter to ramdisk? Sorry, should have explained a bit more. Please do choose a drive letter, just not A: or B: because it will break Windows Update in windows (unless that's what you want ;)). I had first hand experience from it. WU 272_229_3
----------------------------------------Probably already well known but as there are 20 pages of in this thread it's faster to write this than read 20 pages :) Win box, laptop roughly a year old, no progress until around 2 minutes in and then it jumped to around 30% and 30ish seconds later went to 4.166%. Another minute or two and it jumps to 8.333%, after 5 minutes jumps to 12.500%. Seems to be roughly 1 minute it jumps 4% points. Valid WU. |

memory wouldn't seem to be a significant constraint Thanks for that info Richard and bozz4science. I have prepared a computer, now hopefully ready for things to come. |

Another minute or two and it jumps to 8.333%, after 5 minutes jumps to 12.500%. Seems to be roughly 1 minute it jumps 4% points. Valid WU. As I understand it, OPNG tasks do not communicate with the BOINC client during the GPU phase, so progress reports are only available in the inter-job gaps and at task completion. BOINC clients may start estimated clocks if no progress report is available (which is why you got a jump at the 2-minute mark - it got tired of waiting!)... Once it finally got progress information, you qot the jump to 4.166, 8.333 and so on. Looks like that particular task had 24 jobs to do, and as it doesn't actually know the expected time for each job it just divides the 100% by the number of jobs and uses that for progress! Hope that explains what you saw. Cheers - Al. P.S. On my machines I saw reasonably steady progress almost immediately, but I was getting through an entire work unit in between 60 and 180 seconds depending on difficulty - it probably looks a lot worse for those with very old (but viable) GPUs or many of the Intel GPUs, and folks might even think the tasks have stalled! |

@Threadripper and others using RAMdisks:
What do you actually put into your RAMdisks? The top parts of the BOINC data directory do not have crippling write activity; the Projects directories hold the programs, images, etc, which you will want to preserve through a crash that wipes your RAMdisk. They also hold the WU files, which don't churn too much for non-volatile storage. It looks to me that it's only the Slots directories that get frequent writes, so they are the ones to go into the RAMdisk. In the event of a crash including power outage, your would lose tasks in progress. How does BOINC handle that? So ... , at BOINC startup, you would mount the RAMdisk over the Slots directory, after copying out the contents from the non-volatile version, and then restore them to the RAMdisk, before finally restarting BOINC. Have you got scripts or something to handle that? Do you have a periodic RAMdisk backup daemon running too? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_RAM_drive_software |

In the event of a crash including power outage, your would lose tasks in progress. How does BOINC handle that? Since I run several machines on live copies of Linux, when you have a power outage, you basically lose everything. I must start a new copy of Linux and re-attach to WCG. The work units which were running and those in the queue show up in my results as "detached". So they get issued to someone else. Since I use the same copy of Linux, the machines retain their identity in WCG. I presume a ramdisk would act the same, unless you store periodic images and restore from those. Cheers
