I could wait another two days. Then the replacement for my GTX660 (which threw about 50% errors) should arrive ;)

@Richard Haselgrove, Falconet, Widdershins, ..., GPGPU experts
----------------------------------------Thanks for your discussion re problems with the GT730 card. If you quote info from somewhere online, perhaps you could include the URL from which you obtained it, when appropriate, please. I've just arranged to buy a used GTX970 4GB card, so thought I'd better check its OpenCL status. As mentioned above, Wikipedia: OpenCL page has a compact list of devices that support the various versions of OpenCL - see section 7.3 Wikipedia - List of Nvidia graphics processing units has many details of all Nvidia GPUs. It says my GTX970 has a GM204-200 chip, and it does CL1.2. Similarly, Wikipedia's List of AMD graphics processing units has comprehensive details of ATI/AMD GPUs. Thought-bubbles: I haven't been abreast of the GPU scene, so have been trying to get up to speed on it, on performance & efficiency of available GPU hardware, and on GPGPU. I think OPN-GPU needs some kind of guide/FAQ on the knowledge needed by members to start running the project and to get the most throughput out of their $$ and kWH of electricity. A dedicated forum area or at least a stickied thread might be useful, but knowledge in forum format gets scattered and buried. A guide/FAQ list could save a lot of re-invention of wheels, make it easier for people to get on board the project, and more people might join, thus speeding up the research. We would also need to decide where to put it. The Hardware Chat forum may not be read by OPN1 contributors, and the OPN1 forum is not a good place if WCG hosts other GPU projects in the future, though OPN1 would be OK for now and it could be moved later if need be. BOINC Wiki on GPU Computing is a useful starting point for info, but it badly needs updating. Later, I may post some of the links to info that seems to be useful. I do not claim to be an expert, just have been running distributed computing for a long time (before boinc existed).
----------------------------------------It might be nice to have one that is WCG specific. In the meantime, I think that for comparing cards, the folding@home gpu lists are good. While the specifics of the project would be different of course, I think that it gives a good idea of the relative performance / efficiency of different cards. I like https://folding.lar.systems/gpu_ppd/overall_ranks, although I wish they listed the efficiency information on the ranking page so you could sort by it. As an example, here is the GTX970 page along with the RTX 2060 that I have(Not saying it is the most efficient, just happens to be what is in my gaming laptop). By looking at the power cost per 1 million points, you can see the relative power efficiency of different cards. Obviously the exact number would be different if you were using WCG points / have a different electricity cost, but I think it gives a good idea of the relative efficiency. gtx 970 $1.03/million points rtx 2060 $0.33/million points Edit: This is skewed by the quick return bonus, so do not think that the processing power per watt is a factor of ~3x with these 2 cards. Just useful as easier to browse. It would be closer to OPN with the base points or if the single precision glops was divided by the power usage. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by goben_2003 at Mar 23, 2021 10:22:15 PM] |

Thanks, goben_2003.
Another useful chart is on the SETI@Home forum: Message boards : Number crunching : GPU FLOPS: Theory vs Reality Results there were generated from an OpenCL app, which is the technology that OPN-GPU will use, so they may be close to what we'll experience. Your 2060 is 4th from the top of the Credit/Watt-hour chart, at about 5.9. The GTX970, at about 3.8 is a long way behind, but that's 64% of 5.9, not around 33%. I bought the 970 because it was available and cheap, which is much more than you can say for most other GPUs at present. I'll use it as a learning tool for getting to know OPN-GPU, and maybe on-sell it later. ------ This discussion is off-topic ... I think we should continue our hardware discussions in another section of the forum. Hardware Chat Room >> Advice on basic GPU contains lots of very useful info. It needs to be made sticky so that info doesn't get hidden by newer threads. |

PrimeGrid isn't the same kind of work, but it's still good to check their lists out to see, roughly, how GPUs compare with their line of work. Their most popular project, PPS Sieve, is at the top of this page:

Thanks rickjb. I added that to my bookmarks.
----------------------------------------Yeah, the quick return bonus really skews things. That is about the percentage that you get from the more powerful version of the desktop versions of those cards(67% gflops/w). Edit: That is a good reason to get that card. I just looked at the prices and was surprised. I did not realize how crazy desktop gpu prices had gotten. I bought my gaming laptop with the rtx 2060m for playing games, although it actually spends most of the time computing since I have little time for gaming these days. --- Good point, this has gotten off topic for this thread. I will move over there. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by goben_2003 at Mar 24, 2021 10:20:43 PM] |

It seems to take a while for the next Beta run to start. Maybe they found some more problems, apart from the ones in Uplingers last post. If the next run starts tonight (UTC+1), then I will be sleeping, and my computer with the usable GPU's will also be sleeping.

I agree with you Grumpy Swede. On the 19th uplinger said they have received a "pull request" from the "researchers" I am thinking there is a high probability that when these changes get made the application possibly has to go through another "review" process. If this is happening it explains why we haven't heard anything. Just my thoughts

Well, whatever the reason for the pause in this Beta, I'm saving lots of electricity.
